The Security Strategy for the Kingdom of the Netherlands published in April 2023 highlights that the complex and evolving situation in #Venezuela holds significant implications for the Netherlands. Venezuela's political instability, economic crises, extensive criminal networks, and growing alliances with non-Western powers like Russia, China, and Iran pose potential security and economic challenges that could ripple across the Caribbean and beyond. The Dutch Caribbean, particularly the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao), which share maritime borders with Venezuela, are directly impacted by flows of illicit drugs and weapons, displacement, and regional security concerns. In this three-part series, Dyami collaborates with World of Crime to delve into the political, international, and criminal challenges facing Venezuela, and why these developments matter for the Netherlands. The situation is still developing so we will update over time. https://lnkd.in/eZiqW8RH

Despite decades of espionage activities by China’s Ministry of State Security (the foreign and domestic intelligence service of the People’s Republic of China), recent cases in Europe show that China’s espionage remains a key concern for European businesses and society. Reports of China’s sophisticated efforts to gather foreign intelligence and influence political opinion in Europe through covert operations have increased. This is due to Europe’s strategic importance for China, with China’s aim to separate it from the influence of the United States and improve its economic ties and improve China’s image in the continent. Intensifying covert operations makes it vital for governments, companies, and individuals to remain proactive in defending against these threats. The New National Strategy for Maritime Security of Spain (2024) introduces a lot of common concerns and solutions with the allied, regional or other coastal states and their navies that could be benchmarked for the common goals.
Spain launches national maritime security strategy. Spain is one of the most important maritime nations of the European Union. For several years the country has provided leadership for the EU's counter-piracy mission in the Western Indian Ocean, that recently has to deal with renewed piracy activities. The new strategy sets out goals and ambitions, but is also very much a guideline for future engagements and investments in the maritime domain. As we show in our book Understanding Maritime Security (https://lnkd.in/dvarA8eZ ), such strategies are important documents to organize a national maritime security sector and direct policy making. Last October the European Union launched its maritime security strategy which provides the framework for the strategy of Spain and other European countries. (https://lnkd.in/d-2jfhDx) What unites this new wave of maritime security strategies, is that they are more comprehensive in outlook than earlier documents, they reflect on the challenge of grey zone tactics, the link to marine safety, climate change and the environment, critical maritime infrastructure protection, while also paying close attention to the continuing pressures from blue crimes, such as piracy and smuggling of narcotics or people. #marsec #Spain #maritimesecurity #Atlantic
