Take time to celebrate your employees. It matters. Recognition can come in so many different forms. Raises, bonuses, and increased days off are amazing if you have the means. Team picnics and company-wide celebrations can be great with the right teams too. But, it doesn't always have to be big. It can be smaller, more personalized recognition...and it still goes a long way. It can be as simple as knowing your employee's birthdays. Even a simple card with a quick handwritten note and your signature. Know your employee's work-i-versary. Thank them for 'x' years of service. Maybe you're not in the position within your company to approve major gifts, pay increases, parties, etc. But, you are likely in the position where you can take an hour to grab a coffee to celebrate special days or even gift them a $5 gift card to their fav coffee shop and tell them to take an extra-long break. The big stuff goes a long way...but when it's not feasible, the little stuff goes a long way too. (PS - Happy belated 3 year position-i-versary to my awesome right hand gal Brenna S.! Our work-i-versary tradition is crepes & matcha, which we have on the books for next week! Tis the season to be jolly and you may be thinking about Christmas gifts for your staff as you’re feeling all warm & fuzzy inside. ✨ ✅ The good news for limited companies is that you can treat your employees to Christmas gifts costing less than £50 (including delivery & VAT) such as wine, chocolates, or hampers without it being treated as a taxable benefit. ❌ Anything costing a penny over £50 would be fully taxable as a "benefit-in-kind" and needs to go on a P11d. The Fine Line Between Kindness and Professional Boundaries Have you ever extended a helping hand and later faced unexpected consequences? Recently, our company had a Christmas gift exchange party. Last Monday, as the deadline to submit gifts approached, I went over to the Human Resources Department to deliver my own gift. During this visit, the head of HR asked if I could remind my department colleagues to submit their gifts as well. In an effort to assist, I collected the gifts from my colleagues and delivered them to HR. This gesture was well-received and appreciated. However, four days later, another colleague returned from leave with her gift. To my surprise, others directed her to hand her gift to me for delivery. It’s important to note that my initial help was intended as a one-time favour to HR, not as an ongoing responsibility. My colleague also did not insist that I had to deliver it for her, and did the right thing by handing the gift to HR herself. Unfortunately, this decision led to some quiet murmurs questioning my professionalism and my support for younger staff. This serves as a powerful reminder that clear professional boundaries must be maintained, even when being helpful. Supporting colleagues is vital, but setting limits is equally crucial to prevent misunderstandings and ensure that acts of kindness are not misinterpreted.

Many organisations host Christmas parties as a way of thanking employees for their hard work and celebrating collective achievements. While most Christmas parties can be universally positive experiences, in some organisations there are occasionally some instances of inappropriate behaviour that can lead to serious consequences. My wife quit her job yesterday after three years of devoted service. She was HR Director for a contract logistics firm. We were married last week and then took a few days of vacation to unwind. The owner bothered her about menial tasks every day she was OoO (she had left them thoroughly set up for her absence). I’ve heard countless stories from her of employees reaching out directly and chastising her about timely timecard edits, after they’d elected to not clock in all week. She decided she’d had enough. Couple takeaways here: If you own one of these companies (think: the blue and gray trucks that drop off trinkets at your house everyday) it behooves you to behave like an owner and ensure you have contingency plans for everything. You never know when your best employees might decide they’re done 🤷♂️ If you produce value daily and always come through in a pinch (ya know, do the job you were hired to do plus some) and your company indicates that they don’t care about you, your time away - if they can’t seem to muster any base level respect whatsoever - run, don’t walk toward the door. Is voluntarily leaving your job a luxury that not everyone can partake in? Absolutely. But, if you’re able and you’re feeling like enough is enough, drag up the courage to jump. You’ll never know unless you try. P.S. I could not be more proud of her - she’s a badass and it’s always great fun to watch someone deservedly stand up for themselves. P.P.S. Thanks for sharing Girish Vanvari. simplicity is key. Keep out the clutter and noise. We tend to waste so much time sifting through the noise. Noise from needless socializing, unproductive networking, far too much scrolling through frivolous social feeds. Math helps. Count back from 24 hours a day, subtract time spent on the activities mentioned above from 24 and you will arrive at a number. From that number subtract time spent sleeping, eating, daily chores and you will see how little or our time is spent on productive pursuits.
