According to new data from People for Education’s 2023-24 Annual Ontario School Survey, while 81% of elementary schools offer childcare or before/after school programs, only 33% have childcare for children under 4-years-old. Last week, the Commonwealth Government announced several measures to expand access to early childhood education and care for all families.   It will guarantee 3 days per week of childcare for each child under 5, by removing the activity test for those days. And it will invest $1 billion in expanding the number of childcare centres and places, with a particular focus on under-served and unserved areas.   This is sensible policy, which will benefit disadvantaged children and households the most.   Aruna Sathanapally and I wrote about these measures in the AFR earlier this week.

Childcare presents a significant challenge for many families, especially those with unique needs and non-traditional work schedules. As a parent of 3 young children when we lived in Sydney, I understand the struggle of navigating limited childcare options, having a forth child once we moved back to the South Coast exposed different challenges, particularly for under 2's and the absence of before and after school care in regional areas. Serving as a Board Director of ECTARC Early Childhood Education Services and Training has fueled my deep interest in advocating for improved childcare policies at Local, State, and Federal Government levels. There is a glaring gap in support for families who deviate from the standard 9-5 work model, impacting professionals across various essential sectors like healthcare, law enforcement, and the visitor economy. Every family deserves the flexibility to choose the best childcare solution that aligns with their unique circumstances. It's crucial to address the diverse needs within our communities.
