Our full interview with Todd Stern is now live on our YouTube channel. Stern is the former United States Special Envoy for Climate Change and the US' chief negotiator at the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. His new book 'Landing the Paris Agreement: How It Happened, Why It Matters, and What Comes Next' offers a behind-the-scenes description of every step that led to the Paris Climate Agreement, in exhaustive detail. We learn who was involved, what meetings they had, how the negotiators arrived at specific wording in various agreements, what they ate for lunch, and what color each delegate’s hair was. This counter- intuitive article challenges the orthodoxy of climate adaptation. It articulates an unease I've felt ever since "climate adaptation" was co-joined with the term "climate mitigation" as a single action. Aren't efforts towards " climate adaptation" simply a comforting distraction from efforts towards genuine "climate mitigation"? Isn't it easier to " defend ourselves" within the myth of " we're all in this together" than to actually reform the economic and political system that is causing human made climate change? The same system that promotes the profiteering which drives out-of-date technologies forward due to "vested interests". Oil, for example. Cement as another example. https://lnkd.in/dwrsaaa8 ##climateaction #economics #profit #technology #policyreform

Aspects of this circumvention are already underway since 2021, with misreading of emergency acts that utilize loopholes generated by concerted strategic saturation of agencies with proposals, and then selecting project bounds in areas that have a legacy of unrectified tribal displacement, further reinforced through selective industrial-political rackets (cf SE Michigan, Northern Illinois), and emboldened by Federal and local redevelopment programs. Future fines are levied against risks of current penalties and delays on building. The housing crisis and environmental-climate policy are now ruses for irresponsible and immoral building practices that are purely investment coups.

Day 3 of the #arcticcongress at the final plenary session on Climate and the Environment looking through Arctic research and policy approaches. Here are the key strands that have stuck with me today, strengthening the case for our government to press on with truly progressive modes of governance starting at the local level: 🌁Need for representation of islands at infrastructure and national strategy decision making tables. Every. Single. Time. 🌍 Strengthening consideration of climate change across all decisions at every level. 📄 Stronger evaluation of the policies and plans on an iterative basis or we cannot understand the impacts they may or may not be having. 🗂️Organisational cooperation is the foundation for good governance, agreement is not. Who does what is important. 🗣️Communities and changing landscapes hold the answers about the trajectory of their Fate Control. That is where you while find the solutions to the issues that national and international policies have identified. #climatechange #goodgovernance #communitypolicy #local

Did you know that more than half of the countries most vulnerable to climate change are also contaminated by explosive ordnance? Environmental and climate considerations are gaining greater focus in mine action, but how will these aspects be funded in the future? While there’s no silver bullet, the integration of environmental and climate considerations into mine action can secure additional funding and contribute to global sustainability efforts, says Christelle Mestre, GICHD Strategic Planning Advisor in new Center for International Stabilization and Recovery Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction article. Find out more about the current funding practices for environmental considerations within the sector and beyond. 🔻 https://lnkd.in/eeNyNbvR

Extreme weather events have undermined stability and development around the world. This is particularly the case in the most vulnerable regions, where competition over increasingly scarce resources leads to tensions, conflict and population displacement. In his book, our Executive Director Andrew Gilmour explores a number of historical and contemporary links between #ClimateChange, conflict and security. He also examines how we can ensure that our efforts to address the climate crisis advance sustainable peace. The book also contains in-depth analysis of the security implications of climate migration, the energy transition and environmental peacebuilding. 📕: https://lnkd.in/gtASTFhN
