Indigenous knowledge in government practices and climate policies in Australia, Canada, Finland, and New Zealand, and literature review on Indigenous flood management practices in Bangladesh, Canada, and Nigeria. These were the topics of students’ assignments in the collaborative course with University of Helsinki Department of Geosciences and Geography and INTOSAI WGEA at the VTV – Valtiontalouden tarkastusvirasto / Statens revisionsverk / National Audit Office of Finland on Geographies of Inequalities in 2024!
Previously we have worked for example with global #spillovers in the context of the SDGs and the dirty side of energy transition focusing on mining. This year, the topic of #Indigenousknowledge was adopted from the 22nd INTOSAI WGEA Assembly. The comparative setting between Finland and Canada, as well as Australia and New Zealand, provided a good opportunity to discuss the challenges related to comparing topics in different historical contexts, jurisdictions, and governance structures.
One of the highlights of this course is always the final seminar where students present their work to the experts. Warmest thanks especially to Elsa Da Costa, Claudia Migotto and Jonathan Keate for providing constructive comments and guidance for prospective further research.
Students’ reports and visualizations are now available at the WGEA website: https://lnkd.in/eHEx9byq
The report includes #infographics, which we required for two reasons. On the one hand, the growing importance of visual communication is a strong message from the world of practice to the Academia. On the other hand, displaying research results with cartographic representation is traditionally a core competence of geographers. Students Liisa Ahokas, Erwann Berny, Jonni Heikkilä, Ilona Manninen, Tristana Schmiedel, Siina Klar, Katariina Kuusikero, Ronja Wagner, Anders Haugskott, Alex Naumanen, Elmeri Anttalainen, Gangotri Chattopadhyay, Helmi Savolainen, Lotta Puodinketo, Dishni Akaratiya Gamage, Haikku Arosuo, Vilma Kaukavuori, Santeri Ruonavaara, Veeti Sihvola, Antti Paakkari, Arpa Aishwarya, Elena El Founti & Sampo Muinonen did a marvellous job. Below and in a comment are some examples of visualisations.
Thank you Vivi Tarkka for editing the report and Professor Pia Bäcklund once again for a joyful cooperation!
