This week we published our Annual Operating Plan for 2024-25. It sets out our roadmap for the next twelve months, with key priority areas including progressing towards net zero, growing a sustainable economy, helping to build resilience within the sector, and continuing to provide further opportunities for wider participation in the historic environment. Interim Chief Executive Craig Mearns said: “The historic environment is hugely significant to our past, present and future. Today’s challenges, such as economic uncertainty, the geopolitical situation and the climate emergency, impact across the board but against this backdrop, we are making strong inroads across a number of key areas. Visitor numbers are recovering to pre Covid 19 levels, access to our sites has improved significantly and we continue to help communities unlock the potential of the heritage on their doorsteps. “However, given the evolving landscape that we and many others are operating in, we must continue to prioritise activity and resources in key areas, whilst also ensuring we are agile to respond to the challenges and opportunities facing not just HES, but the country as a whole.” https://ow.ly/eWhO50RjCGe

Exploring ESMERALDA's role in land restoration Last week we wrote about the ongoing United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. And as the world rallies around this initiative, the question arises: How does ESMERALDA fit into this global effort? ESMERALDA aims to support the pursuit of Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), in line with the UN's broader objectives, by promoting practices that are socially, environmentally and financially sustainable. While ESMERALDA's methods differ from traditional land restoration efforts, our approach is based on careful consideration and adaptability. Here's a closer look at how we try to make a difference: 📏 Scale: Through our TRACKER platform and collaboration with knowledgeable partners in the field, ESMERALDA seeks to engage in land restoration projects that are significantly larger than typical efforts, covering areas of more than 100,000 hectares. We already had the occasion in the preparation of a project to gain experience in effective stakeholder engagement in complex environments. 💰 Sustainable funding solutions: Recognising the limitations of traditional methods of funding land restoration, which often rely heavily on finite public grants, ESMERALDA is exploring alternative financing models. By covering the up-front costs of feasibility studies and project planning, we aim to attract private investment by presenting so-called bankable projects that offer valuable carbon offset opportunities or supply chains for high quality commodities. This approach ensures project sustainability beyond the initial funding period by leveraging private investments. 🔭 Prioritising transparency and accountability: The challenge of tracking and reporting on the progress of LDN projects has been a barrier for large scale projects in the past. With the development of the TRACKER platform, ESMERALDA is working to improve the way project results are monitored and shared, with the aim of building trust and facilitating better engagement with all stakeholders. After all, there are huge investments involved. In line with the principles of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD ) and the spirit of cooperation embodied by ESMERALDA, we welcome partnerships and support from across the global community. 🌊 The POSEIDON Project: Steering waterborne transport towards sustainability We are proud to announce that the POSEIDON project features prominently in CORDIS’s latest Synergy Info Pack, entitled “Waterborne Transport for a Green Future”. This publication highlights the collaborative efforts of 13 EU-funded projects, funded under Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020, LIFE, CEF Transport, EMFF and the Innovation Fund,. These projects are overseen by the European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environmental Executive Agency (CINEA), and show a united front in the pursuit of a more sustainable maritime sector. As a crucial part of the European economy - accounting for 77% of external trade and 35% of trade between EU Member States - shipping is of vital importance and is also responsible for 13.5% of transport-related greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. The POSEIDON project and the other similar projects are dedicated to reducing this environmental footprint while enhancing the efficiency and global competitiveness of the shipping industry. They will support the development of various solutions that contribute to a more environmentally friendly transport by water. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr Sophie Taysom and Dee Butler for their informative presentation on navigating the new European sustainability reporting landscape. Dr. Taysom's insights on the wider context, key regulations, and practical steps for developing a plan were extremely valuable. It's clear that the corporate sustainability reporting landscape is undergoing a rapid shift, with mandatory disclosure regulations like the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) coming into effect. Dr. Taysom's overview of the CSRD, as well as other important frameworks like the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), provided a comprehensive understanding of the evolving regulatory environment. The suggestions she shared on developing a plan to address these new requirements, with a focus on the CSRD, will be incredibly useful for businesses looking to get ahead of the curve. The resources she highlighted from organizations like the SME Climate Hub, We Mean Business Coalition, and EFRAG will also be valuable references.
