"There's no point in telling people that 'houses aren't for speculating,' when nobody is speculating on houses." Wise words from Trivium China's head of markets research Dinny McMahon, when discussing why this key phrase was dropped from Premier Li Qiang's work report last week. In the latest episode of Departures, I speak with Samir Puri, a British political scientist based in Singapore. His new book, "Westlessness: The Great Global Rebalancing," is an ambitious and enlightening macro view of the tectonic shifts in global affairs as it relates to the gradually diminishing concept of unipolarity. I write 𝑪𝑯𝑰𝑵𝑨𝑾𝑨𝑽𝑬, a no-BS weekly newsletter that tells you what’s really going on with China — and how it’s shaking up the West. This isn’t your typical “China is rising” fluff. I’m talking about the stuff you won’t see in your news feed. The trade secrets, the tech moves, the pop culture shifts, and the quiet power plays. I’m digging into what actually matters. ChinaTalk: Autocracy, Exams and Stagnation: Imperial China's Modern Legacy Jordan Schneider Sep 23, 2024 Yasheng Huang 黄亚生 is the author of one of the decade’s greatest books about China — The Rise and Fall of the EAST: How Exams, Autocracy, Stability, and Technology Brought China Success and Why They Might Lead to Its Decline. It’s a rich book, a product of a career of reflections, with each page delivering something novel and provocative. In this first half of our two-part interview, we discuss… How the imperial examination system (known as keju) shaped Chinese governance, culture, and society, Why autocratic Chinese dynasties benefitted from a meritocratic bureaucracy, Statistical methods for analyzing social mobility in imperial China, How the keju system survived the Mongol conquest, What the tradeoffs in the imperial exam system can teach us about the future economic prospects of China and Taiwan.

Deutsche Welle TV channel has a wonderful high-quality Documentaries series on the main Political, Scientific and Cultural issues of current times. The one I share here today is one such piece. Insightful journalism work from the audiovisual German media company. I recommend friends to pay close attention to what is disclosed - up to what is possible... - about the Chinese industrial complex and how some Western European countries - Germany included - have become excessively dependent on it for the supply of industrial goods... Even simple Antibiotics pills to treat a child's pneumonia. Plus there are other interesting insights about the complex interdependence of some industrial supply chains critical for competitiveness, industrial and commercial edge. The European main economic agents should indeed change their strategy regarding China. It is not clever to believe in the 'good will' of the natural virtue of Liberal Markets Economic policies when the other side of the trade does not abide by the rules. Do these values be 'blackmailed' in the name of some 'commercial edge'. Even for Liberals, perhaps No... China’s New World Order - How dependent is the West? | DW Documentary https://lnkd.in/dfm2ppNJ
