At URS, we believe that inclusive employment benefits everyone—employers, employees, and the community. This October, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), we are proud to showcase our partnership with local businesses to provide equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Recently, our CEO, Dennis Grant, and URS client Kevin, appeared on Living Dayton to highlight the importance of inclusive hiring practices. Kevin's story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when individuals are empowered with the right skills and support. Through URS’s Adult Services and Employment Services programs, Kevin has developed his talents and secured a position at Au Bon Pain at the University of Dayton. This year’s NDEAM theme, “Access to Good Jobs for All,” aligns perfectly with URS’ commitment to creating pathways to employment for individuals with disabilities. By partnering with organizations like Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities and local employers, we are helping businesses recognize the value of a diverse and inclusive workforce. Bridging the Disability Employment Gap Disclosing that I was placed on an insurance scheme due to my disability and essentially being sidelined from work was a tough decision. But this experience reflects a critical issue – the vast disability employment gap. Currently, only 48% of disabled people are employed in the UK, compared to 78% of those without disabilities. There were alternatives. My employer could have explored flexible work arrangements or utilized the UK Government's Access to Work program, a fantastic resource for workplace adjustments.
