Approval and Processing Rates Drop After IRCC's Student Cap Significant changes have hit Canada’s study permit program this year. IRCC's temporary international student cap, effective from 2024 to 2026, and the new Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) system have reshaped the landscape for aspiring students. 🔹 March Sees First Downturn in Study Permits This March, only 33,000 study permits were processed, a sharp decline from over 70,000 last year. Processing times have also increased, peaking at 14.8 weeks in May, the longest in recent years. 🔹 Lower Approval Rates in 2024 From January to April, only 50% of study permit applications were approved, a drop from previous years' higher rates. Suspension of permit processing in early Q1 and the new PAL system contributed to this decline. 🔹 Shifts in Source Countries While Indian students remain the top source, their numbers have significantly dropped. Meanwhile, Ghana and Nigeria have risen in the ranks, showing increased contributions to Canada’s student population. Top Source Countries in Q1 2024: 1. India 2. Ghana 3. Nigeria 4. China 5. The Philippines 6. Nepal 7. Iran 8. Guinea 9. France 10. Senegal 11. Bangladesh Want to study in Canada? Book a free eligibility call with Titan Law today!
