People are switching off from the news. 39% of respondents admitted to actively avoiding news, finding it too depressing or overwhelming. News curation and explainers help people to feel more in control of what’s happening, especially from creators who have built a relationship with their audience. Edelman has partnered with the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism to launch the Digital News Report, an in-depth study of how people consume news and what they expect from it. See how high the "Inspire me" user need ranks! More confirmation that people need to see more positive news about the world. People aren't just after knowledge and better understanding when it comes to news media. The user needs priority index is a proxy for which needs news publishers should target … well … as a priority. The index shows the mismatch in people's needs and how they perceive news publishers are serving those needs, weighted by how they prioritise the different needs. It chimes with what our own research has consistently found. And what so many, if not most, news publishers who start using the user needs model find. Based on survey of nearly 100,000 people conducted by Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.

Social media has once again been reaffirmed as the primary #news source for young people, as highlighted in the recent Digital News Report 2024 by Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. #DNR24 Trying to change the established habit of young people turning to social media for news might be a losing battle. Instead, publishers should consider how they can better deliver news to these audiences. In an article for Journalism.co.uk, Naomi Owusu explains how newsrooms can adapt their reporting styles to engage Gen Z and Gen Alpha. The key? Not fighting social media, but learning from it! 📍 For the full scope, check out the article at the link in the comments!

My friend Perry Michael Simon writes about the decision by Gannett and McClatchy to drop the AP's services from their news coverage: "It’s strange, though. We’re in an era when there are more ways to disseminate news than at any other point in history, and at the same time, the news business is suffering, and people aren’t nearly as alarmed as they should be. Someone should do a story on that." I agree on both points. 1) It's easier than ever to disseminate information. News organizations rose during a time when that dissemination was hard, and because of it, their business models assume a scarcity of content. Now that the scarcity is gone, those revenue models no longer work. 2) We're not as alarmed as we should be. Journalism plays a critical role in producing social capital, and social capital is vital to a functioning democracy. Fortunately, media outlets do have the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. By connecting people and building community, they could produce even MORE social capital, and open up new streams of revenue. The world doesn't need more content. The world needs more connection. Build community. #apnews #socialcapital #journalism #communitybuilding https://lnkd.in/gQZ4H4dm

📰 Why Reliable News Isn't Free – And Why It Shouldn't Be In today's world, we're flooded with information, but how much of it is truly reliable? The truth is, we're not getting the quality news we deserve because we're not willing to pay for it. The demand for "cheap" news has driven many media outlets to rely heavily on advertising as their main revenue stream. This has led to a system where sensationalism often trumps accuracy, and agendas take precedence over truth. It's time to change the narrative. Let's support good journalism and pay directly to the journalists and news agencies who are committed to delivering factual, unbiased news. Quality journalism requires resources, time, and effort – and these deserve fair compensation. Remember, "free" often comes with hidden costs. In the end, investing in real news is an investment in a well-informed society. 🌍 What do you think? Let's discuss. #SupportJournalism #QualityNews #RealNewsMatters #NoMoreHype
