What are the fire safety considerations for a historic site? Is there a careful path to tread for making a site compliant? 'Heritage buildings were constructed well before there were any fire safety regulations to adhere to. 'As such, many historical sites were built using materials that have not been used in over a century which can make them particularly vulnerable to fire damage, resulting not only in the potential loss of the structure itself but the valuable contents housed inside.' Hannah Eales, Partner and Kathryn Sheridan, Senior Associate at law firm Kingsley Napley, discuss fire safety considerations for historic sites. #firesafety https://lnkd.in/ernGvGSC

We spoke to Russ Timpson (Tall Building Fire Safety Network) at Vision Construct, where he talked about how in the aftermath of Grenfell, it is vital to approach safety as the top priority with a sense of humility. 🔥 It is evident that numerous building managers struggle to align their operations with the written strategy due to a lack of expertise. Fire strategies have historically posed challenges for building managers in terms of sustainability. Policies are often influenced by fire statistics, and it is essential to acknowledge that rare but severe events like Grenfell may occur if no action is taken. In such events, it is crucial to respond with resilience, accuracy, efficiency, and competence. Implementing changes like requiring a second staircase may spark debates, but it can enhance residents' sense of security. 🔗 Fire safety should be our number one priority. Fire safety is of paramount importance in the UK, particularly after the Grenfell tragedy of 2017. In response, legislation and guidance have continued evolving to provide adequate safety measures. Fire safety is a critical consideration in building design, with flat roofs posing particular risks. The flat surface can allow fires to spread rapidly across the roof, and if not properly constructed or maintained, flat roofs can become weak points in a building’s fire resistance.
