Sunday Reflection As I sit here on this quiet Sunday, I can’t help but reflect on the journey that has brought me here—a journey shaped by the countless healthcare professionals I’ve met and the thousands of patient stories that have crossed my path. Over the past 15 years, I’ve engaged with over 5,000 healthcare professionals, each with their unique approach to care. Yet, in all this diversity, I’ve come to see two clear archetypes emerge. There are those I call the Number Pushers—efficient, fast, and transactional. They operate in 3-minute increments: “How can I help you? Do you need a script or a sick note? Next!” For them, the focus is on moving through as many patients as possible, driven perhaps by system demands or financial goals. They have high patient turnover but little connection with those they serve. Then there are the Clinicians—intentional, patient, and outcome-driven. They take their time, sometimes 15 minutes or more, beginning with a proper triage and engaging multiple team members to provide comprehensive care. They don’t just ask about symptoms; they ask about stories. They build relationships, know their patients by name, and often journey with them for years. Their care extends beyond prescriptions—it’s about understanding and improving lives. This reflection always leads me to one question: Who would I have been had I stayed in medicine? Would I have been a Number Pusher, churning through the masses, or a Clinician, deeply connected to each life I touched? Perhaps the answer lies not in what I might have done but in what I do now. In creating systems, platforms, and innovations that empower the Clinicians while easing the burdens of the Number Pushers, I find purpose. Healthcare is a system, but it’s also deeply personal. Each patient is a story, and each professional has the chance to either skim it or truly read it. As I move forward in this mission to transform care through technology, I carry one truth with me: Every moment in healthcare has the potential to heal not just a body but a human connection. Wishing you all a reflective and restful Sunday.

Reading #MedicalNihilism by Jacob Stegenga in my opinion is essential for those of us passionate about providing the best possible care. As healthcare professionals, and hospital leaders we strive to base our decisions on solid evidence and deliver effective, compassionate treatments and patient care to our patients. Stegenga’s book is a reminder to approach this goal with humility and a critical eye. Three of my key takeaways: 1. Don’t overestimate Effectiveness. 2. Bias in Research: Strife for transparency and critical evaluation of evidence. 3. Conservatism: we sometimes have to emphasize the importance of “less is more” in patient care. Reading this book reminds me that humility is essential in healthcare; even with the best intentions, we must constantly reevaluate our practices to ensure we are truly serving the best interests of our patients.

As part of the Patient Experience strategic priority in Strategic Plan 2026, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC) has begun the design and implementation of a co-design framework. This framework aims to foster a shared understanding of co-design among staff, patients, and families, ensuring it becomes a cornerstone of how we deliver care. Over the past two years, tremendous effort has gone into defining what co-design means specifically for TBRHSC. A diverse committee of over 30 individuals—including frontline staff, physicians, administrative staff, and Patient Family Advisors (PFAs)—collaborated to craft a definition that reflects the values of our Hospital. Advance care planning. This is on the "bucket list" for one of the recent prospects we spoke to when she shared what 2025 initiatives she's prioritizing. They don't currently provide enough resources to their residents or their families. Chaplains straddle two perspectives related to advance care planning. -The care team's medicalization of care and related healthcare jargon -The patient/resident and their family member's values and goals of care SpirituWell's professional healthcare chaplains can help facilitate advance care planning on an as-needed basis or programmatically.
