🔈International Migrant Day 18th December 2024. Individuals migrate both for purposeful and forced reasons. 👭Being a woman, and parent to a young girl child; having to migrate (purposeful migration). I feel what helped me the most is Education -Education & Education. Education enables women & girls respectively in their home countries and abroad. Migrants inevitably face extremechallenging & adverse situations, however, education is the only tool that helps any individual overcome barriers. Women & girls as migrants or citizens shall know how to access their rights & connect with the right people for their well-being. To be able to deliver effectively in another society women & girls shall be fully equipped with litracy- which includes language as the main pillar & component. Being an immigrant & having the oppurtunity to colleborate with other immigrants is an enriching experience such as; ➡Cultural Exchange & Diversity ➡Global Percpective ➡Inspiration & Innovation ➡Financial litracy & Independence ➡Legal support ➡Moral support 🌟 Human Connection ➡Sociatal support 🌟Sense of Community & Belonging ✳Purposeful migration refers to by choice moving for various reasons, Scio-Economic, Educational advancement, Envoirnmental factors or family reunification.

I've been a migrant for the past 13 years, in Asia (#Singapore) and now in Europe (#Norway). My experience in both countries differ quite a lot. I was first a student migrant and then a skilled professional migrant in Singapore. Being an #OverseasFilipinoWorker taught me a lot about how the #Philippines (as a source country) and Singapore (as a recipient country) treats its migrant workers. Singapore is very efficient in processing work pass or employment pass applications. However, your chances of being a permanent resident in Singapore is quite arbitrary even after living and working there for more than 10 years. In Norway, I am a family migrant (as someone married to a Norwegian). Being a family migrant in Norway also taught me a lot about how Norway treats migrants who move here for family reunification. For example, there is the absurdly long waiting time (mine took 13 months) for the results of your application for family reunification (which you need to renew every year until you qualify for permanent residency). I even had to ask for priority because I was offered a job before they even looked at my application. They took three days after they received my request for priority processing with a letter attached from my future employer before they approved my application. Is this because they don't consider most family migrants as people who can contribute to Norwegian society? I know Norway is for equality but quicker processing of family migrants who are also highly skilled professionals could be something they need to consider.

#attitudes #migration #contacttheory #valence #friendship 📕 How can we make a population more welcoming towards migrants and promote #socialcohesion? Attitudes towards migrants are shaped by inter-group interactions. This means that encountering people who are different, like migrants, can enhance mutual knowledge, reduce anxiety about being in contact with them, and increase empathy. Indeed, the more often people are in contact with migrants, the more positive the attitudes? 📌 Not sure! The quality of these contacts matters as well: voluntary contacts, such as friendship, are definitely a channel that can positively shape attitudes; but what about involuntary contacts? 📍To better understand the situation in #Thailand, #IOM conducted a study and asked Thai nationals about their attitudes towards different categories of migrants. ✅ The data analysis seems to confirm the theory → Read more in the study.
