Nothing about a farming transition happens in isolation. Food production is so very connected to everything around us. From the health of soil and biodiversity, to the health of each and every one of us; as consumers, as farmers, as communities... We can't ask farmers to support all of this without equal transformation happening within the food system itself. How do we ensure a fair deal for nature and for farmers all at the same time as providing fair access to wonderful food for everybody??! Well it's a complex challenge but one that Serenity Hill and Kirsten Larsen set about tackling when they founded The Open Food Network. That was over a decade ago and today the enterprise continues to expand; supporting fair, local transparent food distribution in over 20 countries. They are showing us the alternative path to our established unforgiving commodity markets and it's empowering food producers and conscious eaters to all be a part of it together. I had the wonderful opportunity to chat with Serenity in the latest podcast episode. We talk on the motivations, successes and ongoing ambitions of this work. Last June, in the aftermath of twin Tropical Cyclones Judy and Kevin in Vanuatu, Save the Children commenced an innovative food preservation project to help families prepare for future disasters. The project involves growing, harvesting, and exporting local fruits, vegetables, chicken and fish to Vanuatu’s capital Port Vila where modern food preservation technology has been used to transform these ingredients into shelf ready ration pack meals. Read more about the project in the Devex article linked below. https://lnkd.in/gwy4VwHa

#California new #law, is the first state to set a new standard in reducing food waste! On September 28, it became the first state to ban “sell-by” dates. According to ReFED, a non-profit tackling food waste, the U.S. wastes about 78 million tons of food annually, with California alone discarding nearly 12 million tons in 2022. Notably, food waste accounts for around 24% of landfill materials, contributing to methane production, a potent greenhouse gas. #foodwaste #environmentalimpact
