Reflection of 2024 International Day of Mathematics Date: 14th March, 2024 Theme: "playing with math" Artificial intelligence-powered tools can help students learn math, but students should be skeptical of the technology. Math educators should address questions: How do you best integrate AI into the classroom? Just like it was for the case of calculators, Calculators came out, and we had to figure out ‘how do we could better integrate this new technology called a calculator into the classrooms. It's unfortunate most developing countries have failed to integrate calculator in their primary schools. How will they now address the issue of artificial intelligence? We need to continue to help our students see that math is used in real life, that math is not something that’s just done in class.

While AI overhauls how we think about math education, the existing curriculum seems stuck in the era of calculator debate. When I mention my misgivings about K-12 math, teacher friends argue it hasn't changed because it's 'foundations for higher math' and 'teaches logical thinking.' But most time in high school is spent solving math problems. Not only doesn't solving math problems ensure understanding of the concepts, but computers solve the problems in real life and do so with different methods. Most complex, real-world problems are addressed with data, not equations. As for transferability of logical thinking, that has not been demonstrated in controlled experiments.
