The Yikan Noongar Language Program hit a key milestone this year with the rollout of its Year 4 curriculum, broadening Noongar language teaching in public schools across south-western Western Australia. It provided 64 hours of culturally rich activities in three Noongar dialects, including: 💡 Worksheets 💡 Editable word cards 💡 Voiced language texts across three Noongar dialects We have seen significant progress and impact and the numbers only tell part of the story. At its core, our work is about people – educators, students, families – who are better supported, more inspired and more prepared to thrive because of what ESA makes possible. A fun twist in my teaching career.!!..🇨🇳🇳🇬 Recently, I was assigned a beginner's Chinese language course. While I wouldn't classify myself a native speaker, my experience with tonal languages like Igbo definitely came in handy! Explaining tones in Chinese to my students was fascinating. It highlighted the beautiful similarities between languages, especially when it comes to pronunciation. Seeing their excitement as they grasped these tonal concepts was incredibly rewarding. **In Igbo cosmological view, the tone of "maa" one answers to a call from "one's mother" ascribe to a second tone in Chinese Language... Interestingly, teaching Chinese also rekindled my own dormant knowledge! Turns out, those Mandarin classes I took back in 2014-2015 and 2017-2018 stuck with me more than I realized...This experience has further solidified my passion for language learning and instruction. A picture of our edited book, which is now in the hand of my co-author, Thao Do, of the chapter A Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Approach to Materials Development: Teaching Vietnamese as a Second Language to Ethnic Minority Primary School Students. The chapter is authored by Thao Do, Hoa Do, and me. This is from our recently published Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching: The Case of Vietnam and Cambodia edited by Linh Phung, Hayo Reinders, and Vu Phi Ho Pham. I love the picture. It captures the beautiful essence of Vietnam and a blend of modern and traditional. The book showcases the outcome of my colleagues' projects, but I do hope it has impact beyond publications on paper. Here's the abstract: This chapter reports an innovation in teaching Vietnamese to ethnic minority primary students in Vietnam, which involves the development and piloting of a Vietnamese practice book for Grade 5. Guided by the goals of developing pedagogically sound materials to facilitate students’ acquisition of Vietnamese as an L2, we adopted a culturally and linguistically responsive approach to designing our materials. In developing the package, materials including texts and illustrations were adapted and selected to both represent the students’ cultural values and practices and to facilitate their target language learning through their prior knowledge and mother tongue. The book includes examples of culturally and linguistically relevant visual illustrations, role models, texts and learning activities and received positive initial feedback from the teachers. After piloting the materials, analyzing the teacher participants’ feedback, and reflecting on the project, we suggest that further work be done in this area so that more and richer materials that cater to all ethnic minority groups are available to the teachers and students. Excited to share my First Acceptance Letter of 2024! 🎉 With the growing interest in the Kazakh language, there's a pressing need to update teaching techniques for Kazakh as a foreign language (KFL). While existing literature often focuses on learning materials and textbook content, the methods used in the KFL classroom require further exploration. In my upcoming talk, I'll delve into Kazakh language teaching strategies and practices in instructing Hungarian higher education students at the A1 proficiency level. This investigation was conducted through action research over one academic semester at a Hungarian higher education institution. The study involved 11 Hungarian students enrolled in Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) programs, with instruction delivered in English. Our class met once a week for a one-and-a-half-hour seminar session. The action research findings highlight the importance of establishing robust strategies and implementing corresponding practices within the KFL classroom to enhance language learning outcomes. In my class, students get to decide what role HMong language will play in their lives. There are no tests. This class isn't about me evaluating their language ability. As long as they do the assignments, they get the points. They can turn in late assignments. They can resubmit assignments as many times as they want. They can help each other with the homework. They can use Google Translate. I just want them to engage with the language in ANY way. Engagement is part of the reclamation process. No engagement means no language reclamation. More importantly, language reclamation needs room for learners to create, play, try things out, and laugh. There's no room for shaming or guilt-tripping, and there's no room for advancing an agenda of correctness or perfection. No one wants to learn in a situation like that.
