The Journal of Public Economics just published the paper of a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) on an online math tutoring program for vulnerable children in Madrid and Catalonia (Spain). A paper that I co-authored with Claudia Hupkau and Antonio Roldan Mones. We are so proud and honored of this whole journey, which started now 3 years ago together with Fundación Empieza Por Educar, a great partner with a team led by Miriam Arriola and Zaida Pillado that tailored and implemented a top-notch student support programme focusing on math and socio-emotional skills. The program took place in 18 lower secondary schools in Madrid and Catalonia with children aged 13-14 years old, during the spring of 2021. The results delivered positive and high effects on math test scores and grades. The program also reduced grade repetition considerably and increased the likelihood to pass the subject. The program also significantly raised aspirations of children. Thanks to all the great team that participated and to all the private organisations supporting the terrific effort, including Fundación Cotec para la Innovación Fundación CEOE Google United Way España Universidad Internacional de La Rioja (UNIR) Santander Edvolution From EsadeEcPol we will continue to foster innovative and policy-relevant programs in education for those most in need through top scientific research. We have shown that this is not only possible, but more necessary than ever.

I'm not an expert in elementary math education, but it's interesting that there is now a movement to teach these students to recognize word problems as belonging to one category or another. This is more or less what I do with undergraduate biology students via Test Question Templates (https://lnkd.in/g3bMHmVU): first recognize the type of problem, then apply what you know about solving that type of problem.
I learned a ton reporting this story for The Hechinger Report and The Boston Globe on how most elementary schools have long been teaching math word problems all wrong -- emphasizing key words and other shortcuts that can mislead students in the long run. Featuring one Central Falls, Rhode Island school's efforts to try a new way: https://lnkd.in/e-FWRr23
