The article discusses the importance of post-secondary education (PSE) as a means of social mobility and examines the impact of tuition policies on access to professional programs. It highlights how tuition differentiation may perpetuate social inequities by disproportionately excluding disadvantaged groups from lucrative career paths. The author calls for federal oversight of PSE and the elimination of tuition differentiation to ensure equal access and reduce financial barriers for all students. Tutoring can play a crucial role in supporting students from marginalized backgrounds, providing academic assistance and guidance to help them succeed in their studies and navigate the complexities of higher education. By addressing educational disparities and promoting inclusive access to PSE, tutoring can contribute to breaking the cycle of economic inequality and fostering social mobility. https://lnkd.in/gUY5sz7p #postsecondaryeducation #academic #university #nimbuslearning #college

Despite the increasing diversity on college campuses, inequities in graduation rates persist for students from historically marginalized backgrounds. Diane Cheng from the Institute for Higher Education Policy underscores that creating a strong sense of belonging and enhancing the student experience is key to closing this gap, and federal support can be instrumental in making a difference. By funding initiatives through programs like the Post-Secondary Student Success Grant and recognizing effective strategies with the Postsecondary Student Success Recognition program, we can empower institutions to scale and evaluate their efforts. These policies help create environments where all students, especially those facing additional challenges, feel connected and supported. #FederalAdvocacy #HigherEducation #FederalFunding #FederalPolicy

👩🏫✨”Programs such as dual enrollment and Advanced Placement are well established, and reforms that seek to largely eliminate remedial coursework in two-year colleges are quickly sweeping the nation. There is, however, a ray of hope for complete support initiatives. (…) Instead of making it easier or faster for students to receive degrees with the hope this will dent inequality, we must dent inequality first so the underprivileged student can devote the time to earn the degree.” (J. Schlueter) https://lnkd.in/gWx2XsBn

Just a reminder: the course choices students make every February can shape long-term futures in ways that are discriminatory, and badly understood. Ontario Ministry of Education | Éducation says that decisions about post-secondary are 'personal' choices - but doesn't provide data about postsecondary outcomes, and doesn't want to talk about systemic discrimination. Currently, disabled students and students from some racialized groups, with the same marks, disproportionately enrol in 'College' courses that limit future opportunities - including College. With RobertsBrown Gillian Parekh Carl James Christine Corso. Also see the full report from Jean Augustine Chair in Education Community and Diaspora. As is often the case, TDSB is the leader in sharing data to challenge inequality.

Dual enrollment holds the power to transform educational pathways for underrepresented students, opening doors to college earlier and paving the way for long-term success. But to unlock its full potential, colleges must lean on data. By analyzing enrollment trends, completion rates, and student outcomes, institutions can identify gaps in access and success, particularly for underserved populations. Data can reveal which students are benefiting most from dual enrollment and where additional support is needed to close equity gaps. This recent article from CC Daily highlights what underrepresented students are looking for in dual enrollment programs—and how to ensure these opportunities lead to real student success. https://lnkd.in/gR3Eddvd #DualEnrollment #StudentSuccess #Equity #CommunityCollege #Comm_college #HigherEducation #HigherEd #CommunityColleges

The rate of students eligible for free school meals (FSM) progressing to university has fallen for the first time since it was first measured in 2005-06. A piece from Richard Adams and The Guardian that unfortunately fits a wider narrative around the increasing and concerning disadvantage gap. Our own ‘Double Disadvantage’ research suggests that unequal access to work experience, enrichment, and extracurricular activities is a barrier to entry into university for disadvantaged young people. All are essential for successful applications, and work experience in particular is looked for in personal statements on a third of occasions. However, we found that FSM pupils are less likely to have completed work experience, which could be a factor here. Additional new research on disparities in access to 'assumed knowledge' also showed that those on free schools meals are less informed about the A-Levels that are valued by prestigious universities, as well as other key knowledge around education and careers. We must ensure equal access to insights, information and support that play a crucial role in helping young people find the right path for them. #EqualOpportunity #DisadvantageGap #SocialMobility #WorkExperience #University
