"From Aid to Agency: Empowering Local Solutions" signifies a transformative shift in the approach to development. It emphasizes empowering local communities with the resources, skills, and autonomy needed to address their own challenges effectively. By moving away from traditional aid models towards fostering agency and self-sufficiency, this paradigm encourages sustainable development outcomes that are driven by the people themselves. It's about recognizing and amplifying the inherent strengths and capabilities within communities, enabling them to become architects of their own progress rather than passive recipients of aid.

We're delighted to share the news about our new project “𝙑𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙎𝙤𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙨” 𝙞𝙣 𝘾ô𝙩𝙚 𝙙'𝙄𝙫𝙤𝙞𝙧𝙚, to foster safer environments for children in cocoa-growing communities. This science-based project, in partnership with Save the Children Switzerland and Barry Callebaut Group's Cocoa Horizons Foundation, aims to assess the impact of social contracts on child protection. "This cost-effective, bottom-up approach takes into consideration the preferences of caregivers and children, increasing the chances of success as the whole community is part of the solution,” says Jimena Llopis, Associate Director at CUBIC - The Center for Utilizing Behavioral Insights for Children Here’s how the project works: ✅ The project will be implemented in 15 randomly selected communities, while the other 15 communities will play the role of a control group. ✅ With support from trained local facilitators, each community will identify a set of specific actions targeting child labour and schooling issues. ✅ The commitments selected by the community will be integrated into a community social contract signed by community members. ✅ The scientific assessment will measure the impact of the social contract intervention on child labour and schooling outcomes. This project exemplifies sustainable cocoa production by combining behavioural science with local leadership for enduring change. September 8th is International Literacy Day (ILD). Since 1967, annual celebrations have taken place worldwide to remind policy-makers, practitioners, and the public of the critical importance of literacy in creating a more literate, just, peaceful, and sustainable society. We learned through our 2023 Insights, surveying entrepreneurs, that after becoming a Solar Sister entrepreneur, there was a 22% increase in the number of respondents’ girl children who attend school. Children and participatory planning. In their article "Children as Key Actors in Participatory Planning: Co-Working Experience of Community Planning for Walking Safety Around Bongrae Elementary School in South Korea" authors Bo-Kyung Jung and Donghyun Kim describe how they designed a planning process specifically for children. This article has been covered by twelve news outlets, so the editorial team has made it Open Access for all those interested. The importance of involving children in planning in their own communities fits normative goals that participation should be rich, diverse, and inclusionary, and that child-friendly cities, should fulfill the rights of all children to access safe environments, healthcare and education, green spaces, and opportunities to meet and play with friends. This session will give an overview of the current and prospective grant funding landscape and provide participants with essential tools, tips, and strategies for effectively pursuing public funding opportunities."

🧡BC Hydro Power Smart for Schools Orange Shirt Day Classroom Activity✊ Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, a six-year-old girl from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation, was sent to a residential school where her new orange shirt, a gift from her grandmother, was taken from her upon arrival and never returned. This experience inspired the creation of Orange Shirt Day in 2013. On September 30th in Canada, Orange Shirt Day is a national event honouring the survivors and remembering those who did not return from residential schools.
