📖 #Children, #Youth and #Education are themes COP29 Azerbaijan today. The Schools Climate Hub project led by Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at University of East Anglia, is a great initiative that aims to empower educational institutions across the #EastOfEngland to take meaningful #ClimateAction. 🌄The project, part of the DfE-funded national #ClimateAmbassadors Scheme, provides nurseries, schools, and colleges with access to local experts who can help turn their #Climate and #Sustainability ambitions into #Action. The initiative seeks to #Educate and #Empower #Schools with the knowledge and tools to develop and implement #ClimateAction plans, foster a network of #ClimateAmbassadors for ongoing support and peer learning, and promote sustainability by encouraging schools to reduce carbon #Emissions, enhance #Biodiversity, and integrate climate #Education into their curricula. Key messages emphasise that schools are part of a supportive network working towards a sustainable future, the project offers practical advice and resources for actionable steps towards sustainability, and preparing students with the skills and knowledge to address climate challenges is crucial for their future. Climate Ambassadors come from all range of backgrounds and sectors, such as local authorities, water companies, renewable energy, construction and engineering, education charities and more. They also don’t operate in a silo, working in strong partnership with ‘sister projects’ such as Let's Go Zero and National Education Nature Park. "Climate action is a collective effort. As an ex-teacher I know how isolating and overwhelming the day-job can be, let alone taking on a huge global issue. But it has local solutions, and in partnership with expert volunteers, there is much that can be achieved.” - Kit Marie Rackley, School Climate Hub Coordinator- East of England, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, University of East Anglia. To all my dear colleagues at COP29, as you all deliberate on critical pathways to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis, I urge you all to recognize the transformative power of climate education, particularly in vulnerable areas of Africa. Education is not just another agenda item—it is the foundation upon which all other climate actions rest. Without an informed empowered population, the effectiveness of any policy, innovation, or financing mechanism will be limited. ↳ Imagine equipping young Africans, the fastest-growing youth demographic in the world by the way, with the knowledge and skills to innovate, adapt, and lead sustainable practices in their communities. For example, in Kenya’s Tana River County, climate education has enabled farmers to adopt flood-resistant crops which are currently safeguarding livelihoods. ‼️ MOST IMPORTANTLY, educated citizens hold governments accountable. In nations like Rwanda, where environmental education is integrated into schools, local leaders are currently seeing the long-term benefits of community-driven conservation policies. I encourage you all to drive for impactful policy-making that prioritizes integrating climate education into national curriculums, funding local educational initiatives, and fostering global partnerships to build capacity. This is not a secondary issue, it is the cornerstone of our collective climate ambitions. Without education, the vision of a sustainable Africa and a sustainable planet will remain out of reach. The time for action is now. Let us ensure that education sits at the heart of our resolutions at COP29. 🌿 💯 #COP29 #ClimateEducation #Sustainability #AfricaRising

♻️ (Reshared) Applications are now open for the second cohort of the Global Youth Climate Training Programme, happening this year from Sep 3-Oct 1. We’ve been hard at work preparing this year’s course and are excited to have received an amazing grant from ClimateWorks Foundation to run the programme another two years! Last year, our programme was all about demystifying the UNFCCC and its many tracks of negotiation. Yet, on the margins (and increasingly moving to the heart) of COPs are the actions of non-state actors: corporates announcing pledges for fossil fuel phase out, cities making net zero promises, finance being promised by private entities. It is so important that young people are given the tools and the confidence to navigate this landscape and separate the greenwash from the legitimate in real-time. This year, our programme focuses on cohort and community building between participants. And finally - accepted participants will have the chance to apply for a bursary of up to £3000 to attend COP29. This is for participants who have accreditation (or the means to access a badge) but for whom money presents a barrier. We’re really excited to have 5 such bursaries available this year! (And if you are/know of a funder interested in providing us more funding to make more such bursaries available, I’d love to hear from you). What to expect: 💸 An entirely free and entirely remote/virtual programme to ensure accessibility 📝10 sessions of expert lectures on climate policy, including interactive sessions in the GYC Lab. 📅 Dates: 3rd September-1st October 2024, with pre-COP29 session on 1st November. 🌍 The programme will be delivered in five languages: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic. ℹ️ Further details on the timeline and session content can be found in the 2024 brochure (both PDF and Word Versions for text-to-voice readers) on our webpage: https://lnkd.in/gfNCsBDQ. If you are a young changemaker aged 16-35 and want to improve your policy knowledge and advocacy skills ahead of COP29, we want to hear from you! Youth representing diverse regions and communities most impacted by climate change are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications are open until August 10th at 23:59 UTC. This week, the 2024 #UnitedNations Climate Change Conference, also knows as the 29th Conference of Parties (COP29) started in #Baku, #Azerbaijan. Many stakeholders including governments, higher education, and civil society are looking at #COP29 as a key platform for much-needed transformation towards a more sustainable, green, and fossil-fuel-free future. Since #SustainableDevelopment plays a pivotal role in bringing together communities to raise awareness about the significance of climate change, #environmental protection, and conservation of #biodiversity, the IAU and the members of UNESCO's #GreeningEducationPartnership continue to advocate for the critical role of education in global climate action and for the #SDGs. IAU will join UNESCO and partners online for the discussions on education’s contribution to climate readiness and will be part of events planned for Human Development Day on 18 November under the banner of “Human Development for Climate Resilience” at #COP29. ➡️IAU overview of events of interest for higher education: https://lnkd.in/eRnhMxJ4 - please comment if you have any additions to this list! ➡️To learn more about UNESCO's efforts towards Greening Education, visit here: https://lnkd.in/eRAV7_ih #ClimateAction #COP29 #ClimateChange #GreenEdu #Education #Societies #ClimateCrisis

Imagine a school where #climate change #education is not confined to science class but is integrated into every facet of learning. From incorporating climate-conscious themes across subjects like mathematics and literature to establishing school gardens that promote sustainable agriculture, the whole-school approach nurtures environmentally conscious individuals. Climate change education must go beyond traditional boundaries to address the challenges of climate change. Excellent piece by Geofrey Mutegeki Araali! #SDG4 #SDG13
Uganda is facing a critical moment with climate change. In my latest article published in the #NewVision, I stress why we desperately need to put climate change education front and center of everything we do. As the legendary South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela said, “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” It is the bedrock of progress, the engine of innovation and the foundation of a flourishing society. On this National Education Day, amidst growing climate challenges, the need to integrate sustainability into our educational and vocational frameworks is very crucial. By equipping the next generation with knowledge of clean technologies and skills for green jobs, we will not only nurture tomorrow's leaders but also accelerate our journey towards achieving renewable energy and net zero goals. Let’s make our education system the ecosystem for a greener, more sustainable world. #NationalEducationDay #Education #Sustainability #GreenEconomy #ClimateChange

Heading to COP29 Azerbaijan to promote universal and formal climate education in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) As EARTHDAY.ORG and the Climate Education Coalition we urge all countries to update their commitments to greening curricula in their NDCs in 2025. 10 years from the #ParisAgreement all states need to commit to integrating climate education in their education programs in accordance with Art. 12th of the Paris Accord. #Climatechange can no longer be the only crisis which is not taught at schools. As it should be the first one that the new generations should learn about. Sign the #civilsociety Petition for Climate Education, lets ensure that climate action is build on knowledge and values, climate action is not vision of one generation of activists, it should be the mindset of all human kind. https://lnkd.in/d5ZsF8GP With EARTHDAY.ORG my mission is to advocate for 27 #EU Member States to integrate climate education in the EU NDCs in 2025. The EU block should lead the green tech transformation, but this will not happen without adequate education and green skills. Additionally, I am proud to represent my uni Trinity College Dublin at COP29 which is a global leader for #climateeducation and research and an outstanding institution for green innovation in the EU. See you at the COP, I will be there 15-20th of Nov. dabrowski@earthday.org for collaboration;)

🤝 UNESCO and the Greening Education Partnership at COP 29: Baku Initiative on Human Development for Climate Resilience 📚 An important, however less known outcome of #COP29: for the first time, education was part of the official COP agenda. It is the first-ever COP Presidency initiative aimed at tackling synergies and complementarities between education, health, social protection, skills and jobs, with a special focus on #Children and #Youth. International Organizations, Multilateral Development Banks and international Climate and Environmental Funds are committed to it. Experts are convinced: #Education is a key enabler for innovative solutions to climate change. 🌍 Climate related disasters already disrupt the education of nearly 40 million children annually. Moreover, these impacts rather amplify already existing gender inequalities. The initiative recognizes the importance of greening education and aims at driving global cooperation to ensure that environmental literacy becomes an essential objective of education, and that school infrastructure is resilient and sustainable. The #GreeningEducationPartnership, OECD - OCDE and PISA met in Baku to discuss including questions in the PISA assessment related to environment awareness. 👩🎓 In the framework of COP 29, UNESCO and the Greening Education Partnership organized a High-Level Meeting on the Baku Initiative and a Ministerial Roundtable on Greening Education and Enhancing Climate Literacy Metric on 18 November 2024. 12 #BakuGuidingPrinciples on Human Development for #ClimateResilience were presented at the Conference. They aim at aligning Climate Action with #HumanDevelopment for a resilient future. They call for an integrated quality climate change education at all levels and regular assessments of students’ competencies to address climate change. The ambition is to build climate-resilient and low-carbon education systems. 📈 To this end, the guidelines recommend investing in entrepreneurship, innovation and talent for such new and green technologies with potential to create jobs. A strong focus is on strengthening adaptive social protection systems to build resilience, in particular for the most vulnerable. Priority in #ClimateAction should be given to children’s unique vulnerabilities, including communities and migrants affected by climate change. The guidelines end with a call for scaling up public-private, innovative and holistic financing solutions to enhance quality and equity of education, which are fundamental for the long-term sustainability of Climate Resilience. 👉 Find out more about the initiative here: https://lnkd.in/ebwzUN4x
