Really delighted to see £1bn commitment into emerging industries and known, growing strengths of the UK’s University ecosystems. It’s an essential investment into academic resource and therefore development of the core technologies required to solve mass infrastructure problems across #netzero, #security, #infrastructure and #health. Investing in 4,000 world-class researchers with specialisms in AI, robotics, advanced materials/manufacturing, energy, quantum, techbio, cyber, signal processing/comms and simulation technologies is essential if the UK wants to maintain pace with the deepTech friendly ecosystems of the US and EU. It’s refreshing to see programs backed in regions that don’t necessarily align with their deemed sector expertise clusters - broadening accessibility and room for collaboration. The Centre for Doctoral Training I was fortunate to be a part of in University of Leeds was designed to focus on translation and commercialisation of next-gen health technologies. I hope this ethos is echoed in this next wave of funding the 65 new #CDTs to not only produce world-leading research, but also world-leading entrepreneurs and businesses that can truly have global impact. Huge congrats to all the academic leaders that secured funding. #emergingtechnologies #UKspinouts #deepTech

Our researcher Bronwen Deacon will be presenting at the CHER - Consortium of Higher Education Researchers conference at the Universität Luxemburg today. The paper, "Resisting Digital Change at Higher Education Institutions: Identifying Triggers and Countermeasures," by Dr. Melissa Laufer, Bronwen Deacon, Maricia A. Mende, Tiana Tschache, Dr. Len Ole Schäfer examines the emotional and organisational roots of resistance to #EdTech in universities. Change at the university has often been difficult, characterised by tensions between tradition and innovation. #Digital change in particular has been met with critical voices. By studying 68 staff members across 8 European universities, our ‘Organisational Resilience and Creativity’ research team reveals that resistance often stems from feelings of being overwhelmed, fear of #technology, concerns about job security, and ideological conflicts surrounding what constitutes educational quality. The presentation will also explore whether resistance should always be overcome, or whether it can provide valuable insights for digital transformation. 👉 Learn more about our ORC project: https://lnkd.in/g_JKBZkv

We release today a report on ‘Models of engagement for PhDs with non-academic partners’, which offers recommendations for future-proof engineering education to tackle global challenges. This report, developed under the leadership of our Task Force Innovation, highlights evolving models of engagement between PhD candidates and non-academic partners, such as industry. We focus on how these collaborations can enhance societal engagement, drive innovation, and promote disruptive advancements across Europe. Authored by a team led by Yvonne Kinnaird from the University of Strathclyde, this report explores how partnerships between universities and non-academic entities—especially through "industrial doctorate” programs—can serve as key drivers of innovation. The recommendations outlined in the report provide a strategic roadmap for fostering stronger collaborations between universities, industry stakeholders, policymakers, and EU institutions to advance Europe’s leadership in research and innovation. Key recommendations: 🔵 To university leaders: enhance partnerships with industry to create more industrial doctorate opportunities and improve career pathways for PhD candidates. ⚪ To industry partners: provide greater financial and practical support for industrial doctorate programs and collaborate with universities to tailor research training to industry needs. 🔵 To policymakers: create supportive policies and funding mechanisms to strengthen industrial doctorate programmes and foster innovation across sectors. ⚪ To EU institutions: expand funding for industrial doctorate initiatives through programs like Horizon Europe and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, while streamlining regulations for easier collaboration between academia and industry.
