🚀The report is out! #4thgenuniversity Launched yesterday during a panel discussion at Times Higher Education Europe Universities Summit, the study is the result of a one-year long collaboration with Technical University Eindhoven. A great example of co-creation with an important academic partner, to define the concept of the 4th generation university: an emerging concept that champions an integrated approach to education, research and innovation, with a strong focus on societal impact and regional development. It’s about global universities embracing local innovation with the aim of tackling societal challenges and driving regional economic growth. 🗒️Robert-Jan Smits, President of TU/e, explained how the emergence of innovation ecosystems are creating new demands for universities to be the ‘motor of transformation for the region, in the region, with the region’. Where ‘with’ means here joint strategy development, joint research and education roadmaps with local partners. The report uses novel indicators to show how a 4th generation university like TU/e is a gateway for talents and drives collaboration across important innovation segments, such as key enabling technologies. During the panel, Nicole Saverschek, Managing Director TU9 – German Universities of Technology welcomed the concept of 4th gen. universities: ‘universities are part of multi-directional networks, are key to address societal challanges. Strengthening the impact in the region requires stong roots, connections. Universities as motor of innovation ecosystems contribute from excellent basic research all the way to transfer and valorization’. Michiel Scheffer, President of the Board of the European Innovation Council European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) commented about the key role of universities as hub of the triple helix, and the importance to look at the many different configurations of universities in their local ecosystem, as well as understand how Universities are organizing themselves to guide this trasformation. The #4thgenuniversity concept resonates well also with the discussions around innovation led by CESAER, said VP Tim Bedford: ‘what’s the difference with these universities is the attitude, the way they drive and become active agents in the regional ecosystem, true engines of innovation producing talents. The university system is one of the best connected globally, placing Universities in a privileged position to collaboratively contribute to innovation’. Think global, act local! ➡️ next step: be part of the conversation on #4genuniversity! Join the project and contribute to profiling the mission and role of universities in regional innovation ecosystems. #4genuniversity #innovation #impact #region #global #talents #partnerships #cocreation #ecosystems #knowledgevalorization with Nick Fowler Renee Westenbrink Max Dumoulin M'hamed el Aisati Max Voegler https://lnkd.in/eddqUz5W

A “4th generation university” is an emerging concept that champions an integrated approach to education, research and innovation, with a strong focus on societal impact and regional development. The idea is that these global universities embrace local innovation with the aim of tackling societal challenges and driving regional economic growth. Elsevier and the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) partnered to produce this report, analysing the university’s influence on its local community, notably within the Brainport region. https://lnkd.in/difJVXA6 #4thGenerationUniversity #Innovation #EindhovenUniversity #SocietalImpact #RegionalDevelopment #HigherEducation #TUe #BrainportRegion #Collaboration #Research #EducationForChange #FutureOfEducation #SmartPhotonics #Partnerships #SustainableInnovation

The University of Zurich exits from the Times Higher Education #Rankings, citing limitations in capturing a university's full value. While the universities are slow to change (sometime too slow) but rickety univ. ranking games are as volatile as stock markets! Opt-Out Movement finds the univ. rankings narrow and focusing on dubious matrices, subjective based on fewer weighting factors, manipulable by universities, and unequal that reinforce hierarchies. Rankings can distort priorities for universities and policymakers. UZH's prioritizes excellence over rankings! https://lnkd.in/eMBpkrTG

Really delighted to see £1bn commitment into emerging industries and known, growing strengths of the UK’s University ecosystems. It’s an essential investment into academic resource and therefore development of the core technologies required to solve mass infrastructure problems across #netzero, #security, #infrastructure and #health. Investing in 4,000 world-class researchers with specialisms in AI, robotics, advanced materials/manufacturing, energy, quantum, techbio, cyber, signal processing/comms and simulation technologies is essential if the UK wants to maintain pace with the deepTech friendly ecosystems of the US and EU. It’s refreshing to see programs backed in regions that don’t necessarily align with their deemed sector expertise clusters - broadening accessibility and room for collaboration. The Centre for Doctoral Training I was fortunate to be a part of in University of Leeds was designed to focus on translation and commercialisation of next-gen health technologies. I hope this ethos is echoed in this next wave of funding the 65 new #CDTs to not only produce world-leading research, but also world-leading entrepreneurs and businesses that can truly have global impact. Huge congrats to all the academic leaders that secured funding. #emergingtechnologies #UKspinouts #deepTech

🔭 Research and innovation play a pivotal role in shaping our society and securing Europe’s standing in the global science and technology sector. It helps to make informed decisions and counter misinformation, empowering individuals with the knowledge needed to navigate complex issues. With a call for a significant increase in research budgets, the Research Matters campaign aims to foster innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness across various sectors such as industry, economy, and social development. We call for: 🔵 Increase in R&D investments, reaching over 3% of the GDP within the European Union and throughout all European countries 🔵 Doubling the budget for the EU’s next research programme, FP10, and protecting that budget by ring-fencing it. Happy to participate to this initiative on behalf of CESAER! 🎊 Read our article on the subject 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eXQANbm4 And discover the website of the campaign 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eujgW8Sc #ResearchMatters #Europeanelections
