A simple nudge goes a long way 🌱. This reminds me of the vegetarian default Christina Gravert and I implemented for lunch in our Nudging courses for Impactually. Ok, technically it was not a nudge but a mandate, since we took out the meat option altogether. But participants were always happy with the food and didn’t think twice about it. And hopefully we did our small part in reducing our environmental footprint. If you are organizing an event, a conference, or a course, and you also have the ambition to act sustainably, consider having a vegetarian default. Just a quick, strong reminder that when it comes to shifting consumer behavior toward sustainable food choices, the most powerful changes will likely come from applying behavioral economic principles that don't remove options for consumers; instead, they simply nudge consumers in a positive direction. In this case, simple choice architecture with "defaults" leads to a sizeable shift toward sustainable food choices. We've seen this in real world examples, such as the work done around plant-based defaults in NYC hospitals (Rachel Atcheson). Since it's incredibly hard to make behavioral econ in food "VC backable" we don't often see much funding going toward this type of change. But VC is just a tool in the toolshed of the capital stack. Not the only source of capital out there. So, for anyone out there focused on impact > returns (e.g., non-profits, foundations, etc.), I'd strongly advise looking into funding behavioral econ approaches to sustainable food consumption. And for anyone in the behavioral econ space (Sophie Attwood), if you have suggestions on the best organizations or projects to fund doing great work in this area, it would be great to hear about them!
