🎓Campus life by Ludovic Zaza, 3rd year PhD student and president of Polyvalais, the EPFL Valais Wallis staff association 𝐋𝐮𝐝𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐜, 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬? ⚛️I'm a PhD student in Prof. Raffaella Buonsanti's Nanochemistry for Energy Laboratory. We are looking for ways to convert CO2 into useful chemicals, such as ethylene or ethanol, via an electrochemical reaction. We mainly use copper nanoparticles as catalysts. For my part, I'm trying to synthesise them in different forms to optimise their performance. 𝐘𝐨𝐮'𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬? 🔬In our daily lives as researchers, we tend to spend a lot of time in the lab doing our experiments, before heading home. The aim of the association is therefore to get EPFL Valais Wallis staff to meet up, for example at aperitifs or sports outings. As a large majority of them come from abroad, we also try to promote local events to help them get to know the region better. 𝐈𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫? 👨👩👦👦 Even with the opening of Alpole, the EPFL Valais Wallis campus retains a human scale. I have the impression that everyone knows each other, at least by sight, both researchers and technical and administrative staff. Nevertheless, it's important to create opportunities for people to meet. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭? 🗣 In addition to the social ties that are forged, informal exchanges also open the door to new methods and the use of certain machines or products on a professional level. #valais #campuslife #research

📣 YERUN proudly endorses the "More Than Our Rank" initiative, advocating for a more responsible and holistic approach to assessing #universities. We believe that the primary goal of universities is to serve society, and their value extends far beyond global #ranking metrics. 📊Overemphasis on rankings perpetuates biases toward reputation and historical prestige, often overshadowing the achievements of young universities and the diversity of institutional excellence. Traditional rankings also fall short in capturing the multifaceted impacts of universities. ⚖️YERUN recognises the systemic challenges of ranking systems and calls for a more comprehensive evaluation framework that reflects the diverse strengths and societal impact of institutions. 🤝 By endorsing "More Than Our Rank," YERUN is committed to reshaping the narrative around institutional success, prioritising meaningful and diverse contributions over one-dimensional rankings 👇 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dgaqrKud Brunel University of London Nicolaus Copernicus University Universidade Nova de Lisboa Maastricht University University of Rome Tor Vergata UiT- The Arctic University of Norway Ulm University Universidad Carlos III de Madrid University of Antwerp University of Bremen University of Cyprus University of Essex University of Eastern Finland Universität Klagenfurt University of Konstanz University of Limerick University of South-Eastern Norway Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark Université Paris Dauphine - PSL University of Potsdam Sveučilište u Rijeci / University of Rijeka University of Stirling Tallinn University International Network of Research Management Societies CoARA - Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment
