Precision navigation that does not rely on GPS (which can be spoofed or jammed in war zones)! That is the promise of recently developed devices that rely on atom interferometry (such as measuring light waves) to determine acceleration and angular velocity. A key component is the silicon photonic modulator, which controls the properties of measured light. Advances in the miniaturization of these devices on silicon photonic chips should help reduce the costs from the current $10,000 per unit.
