For decades, a group of Cambodian refugees worked to improve and upgrade their Stockton, California, affordable housing complex. While they technically own half of the property, they're still waiting on HUD to approve their full ownership. Why hasn't it happened yet? Listen to "Will This Resident Group Get Full Control of the Complex They Helped Fix?" This article was reported by Amanda Abrams, and read by John Ludas. 🎧 Listen now: https://bit.ly/4eaSBrI #AffordableHousing #PropertyOwnership #HousingComplex

💯One of the British colonial legacies in Kenya's urbanization is the grouping of 'formal' and 'informal' urban settlements. The informal urban settlements where a majority of Africans lived were often considered economically non-viable and not worth of public investment towards provision and access to public goods and services. While the formal urban settlements where the Europeans, Asians and African Middle classes lived were considered worthy of public investment. 🎯However, a collaboration between the FES Kenya office and the New School, New York discovered that the informal urban settlements do contribute significantly to urban economies. In fact, much of the housing serves both as a home and business. It's time for #Justcities to recognize this and push for provision and access to public goods for these informal urban settlements without wiping them away and rebuilding monolithic 'affordable housing' that doesn't consider the economic purposes of housing for especially the #urbaninvisibles who live there. 📢Let's rethink our approach to urbanization in addressing the needs of informal urban settlements. Empowering Refugees: A Path to Effective Integration As a refugee, I believe that integration is indeed one of the permanent solutions for our community. However, it must be carried out with great care and inclusivity. Involving refugees in the decision-making process from start to finish is crucial. By understanding our aspirations and consulting us throughout every stage, we can become protagonists of our own integration. first of all is shifting from an #assistance-based approach to a #protagonist-based approach empowers refugees, making the integration process smoother and more effective. This transition not only fosters independence but also harnesses the diverse talents and perspectives we bring. Let’s work together to ensure that refugees are not just participants but leaders in their journey towards a new beginning. #ShirikaPlan #RefugeeEmpowerment #InclusiveIntegration #ProtagonistApproach #CommunityStrength UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency World Food Programme Damarice Otieno International Labour Organization ILO PROSPECTS TURKANA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE (KNCCI) County Government of Turkana ITCILO Lilyanne Ndinda, MBA Caroline Njuki Sylvia Kezengwa Nanduri Sateesh Diego Portugal Del Pino PAUL ERUKUDI John Burugu Dr. E, Francis Anno Bodo Immink Henriette Geiger Imbolokonye Ingutia Soulaima Gourani, E-MBA Global Platform for Action (GPA) Kakuma Bee Social Enterprise LTD Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH RefugePoint Refugee Investment Network

Did you know that 70% of the land in Namibia is still owned by white foreigners especially Germans. During the colonial era, Germany and later the South African Apartheid government facilitated the seizure of land from indigenous Namibians, leading to widespread dispossession and displacement. Many white settlers, primarily of German, Afrikaner, and British descent, acquired large tracts of land, often through forced removals and dubious means. Today, Namibia still grapples with the legacies of colonialism and apartheid. The country has implemented land reform programs aimed at redressing historical injustices and promoting land restitution, but progress has been slow. Many Namibians continue to advocate for greater action to address the lingering impacts of colonialism and to achieve more equitable land distribution without success. Namibians currently own 16% of farm land while the Government owns 14% of farm land. #namibia #africa
