California’s 2024 harvest remains hard to quantify; our guesstimate remains 3.2-3.3 million tons, below the five-year average of 3.5 million tons. That said, this month there are calls to action on a number of wines, including specific Italian appellations and white wines in South Africa and Chile. In the first month alone, over $86 million worth of Australian wine was imported, with South Australia contributing $80 million to this total. While full-bodied red wines have historically dominated, recent trends indicate a growing interest in lighter and more delicate wine styles among Chinese consumers, according to industry experts. 🍷 Howard Park’s Sales Director, Richard Burch, noted a marked shift towards white wines, particularly aromatic varieties like Chardonnay, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. This trend is echoed by Travis Fuller of Kilikanoon Wines, who emphasised the rising popularity of Riesling, attributing it to China's diverse culinary landscape. Fuller highlighted that this evolving palate presents a substantial opportunity for Australian white wines to capture a larger market share. 🍾 Additionally, winemakers like Jonathan O’Neill of Sevenhills and Evan Gill of Vasse Felix are adjusting their production strategies to cater to these new preferences. Both reported increasing demand for medium-bodied and less oaky wines. However, Simon Trubiano of Five Geese Wines pointed out that full-bodied reds still hold a strong appeal, suggesting regional preferences might be developing. This is the comment of Edoardo Freddi International, the Italian leading export management company in the wine sector. “In particular, despite the setback in the last 12 months – continues Edoardo Freddi – I see on the horizon in the next 18 months a 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬, which will once again be purchased by enthusiasts and foreign wine lovers, starting with the 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬, the most important market for this type of bottle. The Press Democrat reports— 🍇Demand for low and non-alcoholic wine drives innovation in Sonoma, Napa and beyond. According to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, no-alcohol wine volumes increased 18% from 2022 to 2023, while low-alcohol wine volumes grew 11%. Moving forward, they anticipate the low-alcohol wine category will jump ahead of no-alcohol wine, with “low” predicted to rise at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 14% by volume, while “no” will rise 12% by volume.
