Encouraging to see really positive trends in the number of people choosing to get about by bike in this release from our friends at Cycling Scotland. 📈 106% increase in Stirling along the Walk, Cycle Live Stirling project site 📈 31% increase in Edinburgh at the new CCWEL route 📈 39% increase in Glasgow along the new active travel connection at Stockingfield Bridge Walking, wheeling and cycling makes up less than 10% of our transport budget in Scotland, but the positive impacts of better connections like these are massive. Every single time we feel confident and safe enough to leave the car at home and make a journey under our own steam, this choice saves us money and makes a real difference to our physical and mental health. It's a simple way to do our bit for the climate and our environment - and it's also more fun! But more of these individual choices won't be made without investment in the infrastructure needed to support safe and easy active journeys. These new figures speak for themselves - but none of the 3 projects mentioned above would have been possible without strong, local leadership and sustained financial commitment at a national level over a number of years. Now, the big opportunity in Scotland is to keep up this momentum with continued backing for projects which give communities fairer transport choices. As you can see from this data, it would be money very well spent.

The European Commission's Declaration on Cycling is one of the most ambitious initiatives aimed at recognising cycling as a sustainable, accessible and affordable mode of transportation, offering significant benefits to the EU economy. 📈 After its adoption, the Eltis - EU Urban Mobility Observatory team spoke with key stakeholders in the cycling industry to hear their views on the Declaration and the impacts it will have on increasing cycling across the EU. New research shows that the number of crashes increases with the volume of bicycle traffic, no big surprise, but it also shows that the construction of a separate cycle path along a 50 km road increases safety more than reducing the maximum speed to 30 km/h.
