Electricity currently supplies about 40% of power demand; industrial power (mainly natural gas) is 30%, and motive fuel is the remaining 30%. Demand for power is growing, in large part due to rapidly escalating power-hungry technology, but how will Canada both keep pace with that growing demand while also displacing 60% of the current power supply to meet the federal mandate for net zero by 2035? From my questions at the Natural Resources committee, it became obvious that this government has no clear plans to meet the growing demand for energy for Canada's needs while also phasing out fossil fuels. In fact, they kept saying the provinces will do it. If they expect provinces to solve the riddle, then why is the federal government stepping on their toes while they try to do it? https://lnkd.in/gyYWy2_u #calgarycentre #yyccentre #cdnpoli #electricity #netzero2035

Minister Guilbeault presents Canada's finalized Clean Electricity Regulations The Government of Canada is taking a comprehensive, practical, and collaborative approach to building a clean grid in a way that enables continued access to affordable, reliable electricity for all Canadians. On Friday, December 20, Minister Guilbeault presented Canada's finalized Clean Electricity Regulations, which are the result of almost three years of extensive consultations with provinces, territories, Indigenous communities, industry, and other stakeholders and provide the certainty necessary for planning Canada's future electricity grid. The Regulations limit harmful pollution while ensuring that grid operators have the flexibility to meet rising electricity demand as our population and economy grow. Last week, Nova Scotia Power announced that the forthcoming Clean Electricity Regulations will be flexible enough to deliver affordable and reliable electricity to all its customers. This acknowledgement that the proposed regulations are achievable is important. It shows a common understanding between Canada and #NovaScotia about the regional fit of the regulations and their sound analytical foundation. It also recognizes that we are listening to and working closely with provinces, territories and electricity providers across the country to ensure these regulations work for everyone. To meet its goals of reducing carbon emissions, Canada — which has one of the world’s cleanest electricity systems — will require a massive increase in electrical power generation to replace fossil fuel consumption. The Public Policy Forum, a non-partisan think tank, estimates Canada will need up to 3.4 times more power to keep up with the electrification of everything: cars; trucks; home heating; entire industries. To meet this demand and lower costs for consumers, Canada will need to achieve better coordination between provincial electricity grids. Read more from Ashley Perl: https://lnkd.in/ejY_GWZ9
