Batteries play a significant role in the EU’s green energy transformation. But in order to continue this transformation, Europe will need new resources of nickel, lithium, and cobalt – all key components of batteries. The predictions state that, by 2050, demand for the production of European #batterysystems will reach up to 3,500% of Europe’s lithium consumption today, as well as 330% of cobalt consumption and over 100% of nickel. To fix this supply issue, Europe needs to not only continue to develop recycling facilities, but also needs to find new supplies of primary metals. It’s estimated that recycling can cover 40-70% of the metals required from 2040, but only if sufficient investment is made in the European battery recycling industry. New battery regulations on due diligence and recycling requirements sets strict rules for the EU battery market. When it comes to improving the EU’s access to raw materials, the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) has been passed, which aims to strengthen the EU’s critical raw materials capacities. ⚡🔋 America’s Supercharging Domestic Battery Production 🔋⚡ The Biden-Harris administration just awarded $3 billion to 25 projects across 14 states, with a focus on lithium, graphite, and manganese production, along with battery recycling 💰 This funding is part of a $16 billion initiative to localize EV battery production, boost jobs, and reduce costs 🏭👨🔧 The largest awards went to Canadian company @SWA Lithium and Texas-based TerraVolta Resources. Both companies will get $225 million to produce EV battery raw materials 🏎️ Other major beneficiaries include American Battery Technology Company in South Carolina and Albemarle Corporation in North Carolina.
