Railway electrification systems can be categorized based on the method of power supply and voltage levels. The two main types of electrification systems are: 1. Overhead Line System (Catenary System) 🙂 This system uses overhead wires suspended from structures (masts or poles) to supply electricity to trains equipped with pantographs that draw power from the wires. Common Voltages: 25 kV AC (Most common in modern railways) 15 kV AC (Used in some regions, such as parts of Europe) 3 kV DC (Used in several areas including urban rapid transit and some mainline services) 2. Third Rail System 🙂 In this system, an additional rail, known as the third rail, is laid alongside the two main tracks, supplying electricity through contact shoes on the train. Common Voltages: 600 V DC (Commonly used in urban transit systems) 750 V DC (Also used for metro systems and light rail) 1.5 kV DC (Less common but still in use in some regions) Other Systems Hybrid Systems: Some modern trains can operate using both electric power (from overhead or third rail) and diesel power, allowing them to run on non-electrified tracks.
