🚀 I was thrilled to present our latest work at the 32nd European Biomass Conference & Exhibition (EUBCE24) in Marseille last week (24-27 June)! 🇫🇷 🔬 Our research, "High Efficiency and Zero Emissions Biogas-to-Power: Solid Oxide Fuel Cells and Advanced Biogas Cleaning", explores innovative solutions for biogas utilization in high-efficiency fuel cells. Key Highlights: 🌿 SOFCs: Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer >55% energy conversion efficiency and low emissions, making them ideal for distributed combined heat and power (CHP) systems. 🧪 Biogas Cleaning: Effective purification is crucial for powering SOFCs. Our study evaluates the techno-economic impact of biogas cleaning systems. 📉 Techno-Economic Analysis: For a 3-kW plant, cleaning costs significantly impact the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), ranging from 27-41%. For a 100-kW plant, SOFC costs dominate, but the lead-and-lag configuration helps reduce operational costs. ✅ Cost-Effectiveness: Competitive LCOE: <0.12 €/kWh for 3-kW systems and <0.07 €/kWh for 100-kW plants, demonstrating the viability of biogas-powered SOFCs for renewable energy production. Special thanks to my supervisors and co-authors Marta Gandiglio, Andrea Lanzini, and Massimo Santarelli. #EUBCE24 #Biogas #RenewableEnergy #SOFC #CHP #Waste2Watts #EnergyInnovation #Sustainability

This is so important, maybe the most important post from us so far. Reminder for all decision-makers: conducting a serious, independent life-cycle analysis is the ONLY WAY to really compare different energy technologies including biofuels and other bioenergy applications. Far too often this is neglected in favor of broad brush arguments and unrealistic future scenarios. All investors or potential buyers of green tech should always include LCA requirements in their decision criteria. So how good of a result is this? Well, being able to produce biogas (or any biofuel for that matter) with a negative carbon footprint is truly unique. Only highly efficient conversion technologies featuring inherent permanent carbon sinks can do this.
Today, we are proud to announce the results of our first Life Cycle Assessment (#LCA), conducted in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology. The study reveals that our biomass gasification plant in Kisa not only reduces emissions but also has the potential to achieve negative emissions, reaching as low as -6 g CO2-eq/kWh. This means that our technology can remove more #CO2 from the atmosphere than it emits! ”Through our biomass gasification technology, we can transform locally sourced biogenic waste into two valuable products: biosyngas and biochar,” explains Niclas Davidsson, CEO of Meva Energy. ”Biosyngas serves as a renewable energy source for industrial processes, replacing fossil fuels, while biochar, recognized by the EU as a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology, enhances soil health and reduces atmospheric carbon. Combining these benefits is the reason we achieve such good metrics in our LCA.“ Read the full announcement here: https://lnkd.in/dC_Pg7U8 #gasification #renewableenergy #biomass #syngas #biochar

"We are thrilled by Capwatt’s confidence in our gasification technology, a testament to over 40 years of dedicated development. SFW has proven this technology in biomass-to-liquids applications, and we eagerly anticipate supporting Capwatt in building the first industrial renewable methanol plant in Portugal," says Frank Ligthart, Vice President of Circular Carbon at SFW. This initiative aims to build a cutting-edge biorefinery capable of producing 80,000 tons of renewable methanol annually, utilizing locally sourced biomass residues and renewable electricity from a nearby photovoltaic (PV) solar park. ☀️ The core of the plant will feature an advanced SFW gasification unit, designed to transform the carbon in biogenic residues into syngas. This syngas will then be combined with green hydrogen from electrolysis in the methanol synthesis process. The World Biogas Expo 2024 doesn’t open its doors until Wednesday this week, but for CPL/Puragen Activated Carbons the preparations started yesterday, with the delivery and installation inside the NEC’s Hall 3 of one of our flagship VOCSorber® 30 units. Our larger mobile carbon filters are delivered on dedicated tipping trailers, so the unit had to be put in place before stand building could begin. Pictured below is filter number V389 (one of our favourites!) being expertly positioned in the location that will end up being the corner of Stand J61, our booth at the show next to the Engine Room Theatre. These VOCSorber® 30 units are used extensively in the biogas/biomethane and landfill gas sectors, for removing unwanted contaminants from the gas stream (impurities such as siloxanes and hydrogen sulfide). To find out more about biogas purification with activated carbon, please come and meet the CPL/Puragen team at the NEC this week. You can still register for the expo via the link below: https://lnkd.in/dBSZ-rk We will also be presenting in the Engine Room Theatre on Day 2 of the event, Thursday 11th July, outlining our award-winning and unique technology that allows us to recycle spent carbon from the biogas industry that is heavily loaded with sulfur, which is a particular problem for this sector. When combined with our #NoHiddenFees pricing approach, we believe this is a real game-changer for renewable energy operators. #activatedcarbon #activatedcarbons #biogas #biomethane #lfg #BiogasTradeShow #renewableenergy
