Activate Inclusion has been working to develop the next phase of DEI work. We realize we have to change our lens, change our language and change our approach to embody acceptance and openness. When I got the email that my company The Third Culture had been nominated for a D&I award I immediately thought it was a scam or a sales ploy. I had not entered for an award myself, and a small business like mine often gets an email like this: 'You've been chosen as a top provider or HR services, which we'll tell everyone about if you spend $3,000 on a page in our magazine'. I didn't click on any links, googled the firm and asked around... Indeed, I was elated to find out that it was legit and that someone, somewhere, must have nominated The Third Culture for DEI Innovation at the UnderOne Diversity and Inclusion Awards. The idea that our work creating safe spaces for more complex discussions for DEI practitioners has been noticed despite my personal difficulty with 'PRIng' myself and my company on social media already filled me with much joy...perhaps a bit of vindication for all the hard work it took to get here with an evidence-based, insightful approach. Last week, it was confirmed that The Third Culture MADE THE SHORTLIST. I mean WOW, this is beyond my dreams and imagination. As alluded to, I struggle with Linkedin posting. I really don't know much about the algorithms that help get loads of clicks despite having worked in media for over twenty years. In fact, I am quite sure this post will be one of my lowest in terms of reach ever. Nonetheless, I am giving myself a pat on the back today and look forward to The Third Culture's future supporting 'fearless and human inclusion conversations'. The end! #UnderOneAwards

As we begin #NationalInclusionWeek, it is a moment to reflect on how each of us plays a pivotal role in fostering a more inclusive world. Inspired by Accenture’s powerful message in their "Inclusion Starts with I" video, we are reminded that inclusion begins with personal responsibility. Each of us must look inward to create a culture of belonging. True inclusion goes beyond policies or grand gestures; it is in the everyday actions we take, in the way we listen, learn, and act. It requires each of us to be aware of our biases, to embrace diversity in all its forms, and to create safe spaces where everyone feels valued and respected. The I in inclusion is a powerful reminder that change starts within each of us; our attitudes, our behaviours, and our willingness to stand up for those whose voices are often unheard. As we celebrate this week, let us commit to leading by example, creating environments where everyone can thrive, and recognising that the journey to inclusion is one we must take together. Let us be the change, starting with I.

It’s Inclusion Week. If you take meaningful action, if you take time to reflect and if you speak up about inclusion and why we need to drive meaningful change at a faster pace. If you do all this because it’s a core belief of yours then you inspire me. There’s lots of my great network who live every day taking action on inclusion, sometimes the small changes, sometimes the really big ones. There’s more we can do though: we need to tranform our culture and live by our values and sometimes that can feel uncomfortable or new, but you take the chance, you will reap the benefit in engagement, in results, in culture and innovation. Think differently, take action and see what that looks like in your teams. Thanks to the people who DO. As we celebrate National Inclusion Week, we recognise the critical role inclusion plays in breaking down barriers in learning and development. Too often, traditional learning models leave certain voices unheard and certain talents untapped. Humbled to represent Ketchum UK and PRCA’s Equity and Inclusion Advisory Board (EIAB) today, joining an incredible panel at the PRCA National Conference on "Generation Plus: Harnessing the Talent and Power of Multi-Generational Teams" with the brilliant minds of Jackie Cooper (Chief Brand Officer, Edelman), David Parton (Director, Edelman Smithfield), Alexandra Stevens (Head of PR & Communications Recruitment, Reuben Sinclair), and expertly chaired by Ishtar Schneider. With five generations in today's workplace, the role of leaders and teams is more vital than ever. Our discussion covered everything from motivational drivers to a hyper-personalised approach to fostering belonging. One key takeaway? None of this is achievable without a deeply embedded, evolving inclusion strategy - one that actively listens, involves multiple voices, and adapts to the changing needs of our people. My call to action is this: ensure your inclusion strategy is fit for purpose, speaking both to individuals and the generational communities they represent. It's about making everyone feel seen, heard, and valued. But most importantly, it's bringing them along a purposeful journey.

A Year of Inclusioning As I reach the end of my first year of being a full-time Inclusioner (Inclusioneer?, Inclusionist?), I thought it might be interesting to reflect on what I’ve learnt over the last 12 months. Over the next few days, I’m going to share a few stories of my experiences this year. The last 12 months have been one of the craziest of my near 40 years of working life. It’s been at times exhilarating, depressing, scary, fascinating, exhausting, tedious, mind-blowingly complex and ridiculously simple, sometimes all in a single day. However, my overriding emotion as I look back at the last 12 months is pride. I am so proud of the work that Mark, Alana, Tara and I have done at Men for Inclusion this year. I am also incredibly proud of all of our partners in this endeavour. From all the people in our workshops or who listened to or watched our events through to those who try to lead in a different way – in an inclusive way. There are so many people doing wonderful work to try make the world a more equitable and inclusive place, there are way too many to call out, but you know who you are. I applaud you every day. I feel honoured and energised by being part of your network and I am so glad you are my accomplices on this huge undertaking. So what have I learnt about being an Inclusionist in 2024 – a year that has tried its darnedest to make every small, incremental gain feel like the toughest, hardest yards of your life. I've jotted a few ideas on this longer blog - https://lnkd.in/eMU9Mq9Q - but the most important thing I have learnt is that I really see that change is possible. Over 430 people have attended our Inclusion Champions workshops this year and over 70% have said they will implement changes in their team to create a more inclusive culture. I think that is worth celebrating.

Happy Wednesday! I hope you are staying cool on these hot summer days. I appreciate the seasons as they pique my curiosity for what's next to come. There are so many unanswered questions when it comes to inclusion. Hence, we make space to ask questions that address our assumptions. Here are some examples. WHAT DO WE DO TO CREATE INCLUSION: We plan efforts, observe those efforts, and reflect on what we received from the action. WHERE DO WE CREATE INCLUSION: We create it professionally and personally to become an inclusive person versus doing inclusive work. HOW DO WE CREATE INCLUSION ON THE SLOPES: We reframe the culture with an inclusive lens while depicting the value of inclusion. We ask questions to gain insight into solutions. With inclusion, there isn't a one-size-fits-all considering needs do change. Our connectivity to address these needs is essential.
