One of the most poignant quotes about the value of portrait photography comes from the renowned photographer Steve McCurry: "A portrait is not made in the camera but on either side of it." This quote beautifully encapsulates the essence of portrait photography, highlighting that it's not merely about the technicalities of photographing but about the connection and interaction between the photographer and the subject. It emphasizes that the true value of a portrait lies in its ability to capture and convey the unique essence, personality, and emotion of the individual being photographed. Investing in portrait photography is investing in art that preserves moments, emotions, and the intricate details of our lives. It offers a timeless way to cherish and remember the people we love and the stages of our lives and relationships. Portraits go beyond mere documentation; they can tell stories, evoke emotions, and connect us to our past, present, and future. As such, portrait photography holds intrinsic value not just as a moment captured but as a deeply personal keepsake that can be appreciated by current and future generations. The Essence of Capturing in Street Photography Many novice photographers are excited to experiment, starting with a camera or smartphone. However, photography is more than just shooting images; it's also about preserving moments that convey narratives. This idea is essential to street photography. There are a lot of unplanned encounters, feelings, and developing stories in the streets. Our aim as photographers is to capture these moments true to life, without any staged moments. Therefore, advise all aspiring photographers to look outside the frame. Not simply document the scenes, but also the stories. . #StreetPhotography #VisualStorytelling #PhotographyTips. . "Photography is not about the thing photographed. It is about how that thing looks photographed."" Garry Winogrand Surface, representation, veracity, intent. Interesting that this quote makes me think about product photography when it comes from one of the giants of street shooting. I'm basically a portrait photographer and the idea put forward by Oscar Wilde in the Picture of Dorian Gray that every portrait is a self portrait has always resonated with me. It's not the subject that is being represented, the subject is a vehicle for what the photographer wants to express. That's also my interpretation of Winogrand's statement. If we're honest about that intent we have truthful images, I think that has value when there's generally so little trust in photography. My own little contribution to truth and beauty, I'm leading workshops in old school analogue photography. This weekend it's a processing workshop, completely mechanical cameras and developers made ourselves from instant coffee and washing powder. 100% no jiggery pokery. Yesterday, August 19th, marked World Photography Day, a celebration of the art and impact of photography. This day commemorates the 1839 invention of the daguerreotype by Louis Daguerre, a pivotal moment that revolutionized how we capture and preserve memories. Photography has since evolved from a complex process into an accessible medium that touches every aspect of life—be it journalism, art, or personal storytelling. Through iconic images, photography shapes public opinion, ignites social movements, and connects us across cultures. In the digital age, anyone can share their perspective, making photography a universal language that transcends borders. While the official celebration was yesterday, the appreciation for photography continues. Today, we reflect on the photographers who capture the essence of our world and the photographs that tell our stories, reminding us of the power of an image to inspire, connect, and preserve our shared human experience. #WorldPhotographyDay #PhotographyArt #PhotoHistory #CaptureMoments #InspireThroughPhotos #PhotographyLife #PhotographyCommunity #PhotographyImpact #PreserveMemories #PhotographyLove #PhotographyCelebration #ArtOfPhotography
