Yesterday, I had the opportunity to virtually attend the Clifford Chance event: ’One Firm: A Showcase of our Global Strategy.’ 📝Here are some of my key takeaways: ⭐️Hearing from Josh Dowdall (Senior Associate in Global Financial Markets-SABRE), I gained a deeper understanding of the different forms of financing such as securitisation, equity capital, the use of initial public offerings (IPO), and debt financing. ⭐️When answering the question, ‘How was a client relationship built and strengthened in a recent deal?’ Alex Szlezinger (Associate in Corporate Transactions) highlighted a recent deal involving a new client for Clifford Chance from the FTSE 100, emphasising the importance of being able to deliver quality work which aligns with the company’s reputation. By delivering your client’s specific needs at a high standard, you retain a relationship which will continuously strengthen. This piece of advice affirmed to me how important the skills of client service are, especially at a magic-circle law firm like Clifford Chance, which values putting clients at the heart of everything their lawyers do. Further, I learnt from the panel which also included Emma Matebalavu (Global Head of GFM), Gyasi Vialva-Husbands (Trainee Solicitor), and Matt Lyons (Partner, New York), that some of the most key skills for a lawyer to have include a real eye for detail, strong communication skills both orally and in writing, organisation skills, and the ability to see around corners (as clients have high standards and expect top lawyers to predict what is going to happen from their own prior experience and knowledge!) ✨My favourite piece of advice that I gained from this event was that every day, you should make attempts to step out of your comfort zone by trying something new, even if the feeling makes you scared. I will definitely be taking this on in my own personal and professional life! Half of these firms now publish ethnicity targets to address underrepresentation.
