The demand has only increased in recent years for the work of applied epidemiologists, including data visualizations, data dashboards, explanatory models and forecasts, and other data products. These insights are relied upon by the public and by public health decisionmakers to better understand issues ranging from COVID-19 community transmission, to the health effects of climate change, to how life expectancy varies based on neighborhood conditions. This report sheds light on what is needed to ensure there is a trained workforce (like increase the number of people trained in public health informatics!) to meet this increased demand, as well as funding challenges that compromise the ability of health departments to maintain the necessary staffing. #CSTE #Epidemiology #Informatics
Out today! #CSTE and the Big Cities Health Coalition ’s 2024 Epidemiology Capacity Assessment. The reports outline the unmet applied epidemiology workforce and capacity needs across the U.S. within state, territorial, and big cities health departments.
The ability of the U.S. public health system to protect us from current and emerging health threats is at stake. The capacity to deliver essential epidemiology public health services for the U.S. has declined — and is in danger of declining further due to lack of sustained federal funding, especially with the end of COVID-19 funding.
