Thanks all sponsors and participants for a great meeting! The insights from such a meeting can be in anything: from a great keynote to a discussion in front of a science poster (or at the bowling track). As a somewhat arbitrary but cool example: I like the talk by Leonado Jo from the lab of Kaisa Kajala, who showed us how variable the barrier layers are in the roots of legumes (plants like chickpea, clover and beans). I also gave a talk myself about our Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) project about mirror images flowers. It is a story from molecular mechanism to ecology and evolution and a celebration of biodiversity in plant science. Although, at multiple stages in the project we also experienced how fragile the beautiful inventions of nature can be.
KeyGene is proud to be sponsor of the annual meeting of the Graduate School Experimental Plant again this year. The two-day event brings together over 450 PhD students and supervisors of six universities in a vibrant atmosphere.

A huge congratulations to the Bonin lab on not one, not two, but three fantastic achievements! 👏 🥳 1️⃣ New paper out in Current Biology Xu HAN uncovered how the brain’s visual pathways are far more dynamic than previously thought. He identified specialized pathways that either selectively target regions for detailed visual information or broadcast signals broadly to coordinate brain activity. 2️⃣ New paper out in Cell Reports In a second study, spearheaded by Karolina Socha, the team revealed how the thalamus adapts visual processing based on behavioral states, such as wakefulness or arousal. 3️⃣ Research Foundation Flanders - FWO Project Grant Vincent Bonin, together with Asli Ayaz, also secured an FWO project grant to further explore the contributions of non-hierarchical visual pathways to visual encoding and perceptual behavior. There are often more setbacks than successes in academia, making it extra rewarding to see years of hard work by the entire team and all co-authors culminate in this wonderful set of outcomes. What a fantastic way to end the year! 🙌 🎊 📸 Calcium activity of cortical neurons in the mouse visual system (doubling as confetti! 🎊)

Understanding the biology of Parkinson’s disease and turning that knowledge into better treatments is a complex undertaking. In the newest episode of our award-winning Parkinson’s Science POV series, scientists at MJFF discuss how they are tackling this problem from every angle. In the episode, we sit down with MJFF Chief Program Officer Sohini Chowdhury and other staff members to discuss their work, the projects they’re most proud of and their hopes for 2025. Whether it’s using cutting-edge imaging to get a picture of the disease in the brain or working with the community to develop better options to treat walking difficulties, our researchers are collaborating to discover the next wave of treatment options and close in on a cure. Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the ISPRS Technical Commission III Mid-term Symposium on Remote Sensing in Belém, Brazil. It was a great opportunity to connect with colleagues in the field and share the initial findings of my doctoral research, conducted in collaboration with INRAE - UMR ITAP, where I completed a PhD exchange. The full paper, "Use of ResNets for HLB Disease Detection on Orange Leaves Using Terrestrial Multispectral Images", can be accessed via the following link: https://lnkd.in/d4iUWbcA

It was a great experience to participate in the "Social Interactions in Mediterranean Prehistory" Conference (SIMEP 2024), which was held between the 21st and 23rd of October in the PRBB (Barcelona Biomedical Research Park). Our poster contribution, entitled ''Unraveling the behavioral patterns of past populations through the study of dental wear: The examination of 2 case studies from the recent Prehistory of the Iberian Peninsula'', focused on the understanding of paramasticatory enamel chipping from the Bronze Age sites of Galls Carboners and El Bordellet, both located in Catalonia, Spain. The specific study reflects part of the results obtained in the framework of my Master's Thesis! More details about the conducted analysis and the defense are coming in another post 🥳

We are proud to announce that Irmantas Mogila, a young scientist from Vilnius University (VU) Life Sciences Center (VU GMC), has been recognized among the world's most talented young researchers in the field of life sciences. He has been awarded the prestigious international Birnstiel Award 🏆 for his research achievements in the field of molecular biology. Research into bacterial defence mechanisms offers insights into the interactions between bacteria and the viruses that attack them during infection. Understanding these defence mechanisms could help develop bacterial strains resistant to viral infections, which are crucial for biotechnology and the food industry. In medicine, the pressing issue of antibiotic-resistant bacteria might be addressed by using bacteriophages, which can bypass bacterial defence systems. Additionally, CRISPR-Cas systems, known for recognising viral nucleic acids, are excellent tools for developing various virus detection kits.
