Have you spotted some beautiful silhouettes darting and diving in the summer sky? Swifts, swallows, house martins and sand martins are all summer visitors to the UK. 🐦🐦🐦 While the swift spends most of its time soaring high in the sky, the swallow or 'barn swallow' might be seen perching on a wire, or roosting in a reedbed. Here are our top tips to work out what you might have spotted! Learn how to identify these beautiful birds: https://lnkd.in/exPfb8a4

The front of the bullet train was designed to mimic the kingfishers beak as it helps reduced noise leaving tunnels. The guy who designed it was a proper twitcher and noticed how little splash the kingfishers created when diving in the water. Lesson for us all… want to find solutions to problems? Get out in #nature and see how it achieves the same outcome. #somuchtolearn

𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝟮.𝟬 In the early 1990s, when newly named “tech divers” were dying at an alarming rate, the fledgling tech community came together to create a consensus standard of “best practices” modeled after explorer Sheck Exley’s book Basic Cave Diving—A Blueprint for Survival. The goal was to reduce tech fatalities STAT. The resulting recommendations, published in aquaCORPS, are well worth reviewing if you haven’t; with a couple of exceptions, like oxygen limits and equipment to protect a diver’s airways, they hold up well nearly 30 years later. Blueprint 2.0 was compiled by Michael Menduno and Capt. Billy Deans. Is your BCD inflator or dump valve broken? Do you think it’s a waste to throw away a perfectly good-looking BCD because the valve can’t be repaired or replaced? Dive shops tell you that the valve can’t be repaired or that even if it could, it won’t last. Scuba-Fix has the solution for you. #kirkscubagear #brokenBCDvalves #BCD #ScubaFix

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION Well…sort of. Vest style BCs seem to get a bad reputation in the scientific diving community these days. Let’s debunk this myth. Vest style BCs can be incredibly effective for a variety of data collection techniques. The diver here is a fantastic example that (with training and practice) a diver in a vest style BC can achieve an almost 45 degree angle for collecting data, putting the fin tips up and off the subrtrate and the diver’s neck/head in a comfortable neutral position for long periods of time. Additionally those big pockets sure have come in handy on many occasions when hands get full. What I am most passionate about; most of the back plate/back inflate just are not cut out for a curvy frame. Jury is still out on the “safety factor” especially on the surface, but I can say I have seen countless divers struggle on the surface with backplate BCs. Here’s the point: let’s dial back the narrative that you need a certain type of BC to be an effective scientific diver. The key is to ensure the gear is functional, the diver is familiar and well practiced, and the objectives are being accomplished. Am I just a bit old school? Maybe. Thoughts?
