What DO those ribbons mean on a military uniform? On the eve of Veteran's Day, I reflect on this post about the military uniform. A uniform can have as few as one (1) for completing basic training or so many stacked up high that it resembles the station wagon in National Lampoon's Vacation. What they mean can vary with perspective. To the military service member, it shows their service and personal accomplishments to outwardly display the unclassified highlights of their career. As this is a professional environment, it's comparable to an abbreviated public-facing version of their resume. To the general public, it's typically appears to be an abstract assortment of colors to show the length of the journey a soldier, sailor, or airman takes throughout their career; and the only discernable difference is the volume. But, to the families, this image represents the opportunity cost of physical and emotional sacrifice made in order to accomplish the goals of supporting and defending the nation. Thank you to Michael Klemmer for this comically-intended post that contained plenty of sincere meaning to many of us. Please remember that military service is more than "just a job" and how your country would look and operate that service. #Patriotism #Honor #FreedomIsNotfree #ThankYouForYourSevice #SupportMilitaryFamilies #VeteransDay #Salute

Aside from the fact that this should be gender neutral since everyone in uniform can share these experiences, the image itself is a "shatter glass" moment for how I view a military "rack." As a brand new Airman, I would often go out of my way to collect them. I wanted a big rack because I thought it looked cool. Then I got older and amassed quite a few of them. The Air Force has a tendency to give ribbons for a lot of things. I then started to feel the burden of the cost. One set for the blues jacket, one for your blues shirt lest you take off your jacket and be labeled a dirt bag for not having one on both shirt and jacket (actual conversation with a Chief). Let's not forget your Mess Dress, which nearly doubles the cost for one rack because we all want the tiny medals. Ultimately, I was able to get a quick synopsis of a person by glancing at what was on their rack. How many years served, how many deployments, how often did you see combat, heck, even if you kept your nose clean. Thanks to this image, I don't think I'll read a rack the same way. The toll on my family after two decades is immeasurable. I know they are more resilient because of the moves and experiences, but I'm not sure it was worth the cost. While I'm proud of my service, I don't think I'll feel the same about that rack in my shadowbox going forward. What are your thoughts on this take of our decorations and ribbons?

🚨 Our Veterans Deserve Better – Act NOW 🚨 Many veterans who have suffered from Military Sexual Trauma (MST) are struggling without the retroactive disability pay they desperately need. HB6023, the Veteran Restitution and Justice Act of 2023, aims to fix this by providing financial support from the day they were discharged. Many of these heroes are left unable to work and even homeless due to the trauma they endured. This is unacceptable! Our politicians have the power to change this, but they need to hear from you. If your representative isn't listed among the supporters of this bill, they’re failing our veterans. It’s time to demand action. Reach out NOW and share this post widely. Let’s ensure no veteran is left behind. 🧿 Your story is your weapon. As someone deeply committed to the mental health space, I believe that now, more than ever, it's time to make mental well-being accessible to everyone. Far too many people still struggle to find the right support, and breaking down those barriers is a cause I hold close. By focusing on making mental health services and resources easier to understand and access, we can help create a world where asking for help is seen as a strength, not a stigma. We need more open conversations, more shared experiences, and most importantly, more compassion. Whether it’s through education, support systems, or just spreading awareness, each small step contributes to a healthier future for all of us. 💬 Let’s continue to work together to create real, lasting change—because no one should ever feel like they’re going through this journey alone. https://lnkd.in/gKs8D3J2
