For the sixth consecutive year I am fundraising for Hutt St Centre's Walk a Mile in my Boots campaign. August is one of my favourite times of year, not just because I get to wear my favourite colour every day of #NationalHomelessnessWeek, but also because I am able to use my skills in #socialmediacontentcreation and #storytelling to give back to my community. There is a lot to be said about the benefits of #volunteering and #fundraising, not just for how it impacts the people who rely on the cause you’re supporting, but also for personal wellbeing. 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝘀 𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀: 1. 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴: Connecting with my community online and in person, having conversations and meeting people with aligned values helps me feel like I belong to something bigger than myself. 2. 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Actively supporting a cause that is important to me reminds me that I have the power to shape the world I want to live in. 3. 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵: Watching the total miles and donations gradually build over the week helps to sustain gratification and motivate progress towards my goals. 4. 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲: Supporting my community brings so much meaning into my life and allows me to live in line with my values. Participating in Walk a Mile in my Boots also fosters my wellbeing by encouraging me to move my body, spend more time in nature and practice gratitude and reflection. When I'm giving back I feel more motivated, hopeful and generally have an elevated mood. 🧡 Hutt St Centre provides essential services for people at risk of or experiencing homelessness in South Australia. If we’ve learned anything the past few years, it’s that our circumstances can change in the blink of an eye, and we rely on the communities around us for support through hard times. National Homelessness Week 2024: Taking Action Now This week is National Homelessness Week, a time to bring our attention to the wide range of people that are impacted by Homelessness here in Australia. There is an estimated 122,000 individuals who find themselves without a place to call home on any given night. Homelessness is not just the rough sleepers you see out on the streets in the city or in their car, it includes people who are forced to move from one temporary shelter to another, such as emergency accomodation and refuges or people coach surfing. And then there are also the people who live in accomodation that falls below the minimum standards, this can include boarding houses, caravan parks and overcrowded homes. The theme for this year’s Homelessness Week is “Homelessness Action Now,” emphasising the urgent need for solutions to end homelessness. Let’s use this week not just to talk about homelessness but to take concrete steps towards ending it. There were 1,178 overall attendances at Spires from April-June. 266 different people received support from Spires through that period. Here are some of the main outcomes we achieved: 🏠 56 people received housing support - 14 people supported into permanent or temporary accommodation. - 11 people provided with pre-emptive tenancy sustainment support. 👨⚕️ 29 people received health support - 10 people supported to attend a health appointment. - 11 people supported to engage with our Mental health support team. 💷 29 people offered benefits support - 8 people who have started to receive benefits. - 16 people helped to maintain benefits We have raised just over £500 in the first week of our crowdfunding campaign, but we need much more to continue achieving outcomes like these. 👏ALONE & HOMELESS CHALLENGE: From Fundraiser To Frontline - Part 1👏 After the Alone & Homeless in London Fundraiser last month, I set out with one purpose: to put every pound raised directly into the hands of those who need it most. Thanks to the incredible generosity and trust of everyone who contributed to the £1,000 raised - an amazing result. As an individual, not a charity, I’m so grateful for the faith people placed in me to make this happen. Last Friday the 8th, we went out through Maidstone and Chatham, distributing essential supplies that can bring warmth and comfort during these colder months. These simple actions may seem small, but on the streets, they’re anything but... If this experience has taught me anything so far, it’s that change starts when we each take small, consistent steps. Imagine if more people took even a day to do something similar, creating ripples of awareness and empathy through their networks. The combined effect would be massive! Not just in providing direct help, but in sparking a real mindset shift in society. From what I’ve seen firsthand, there’s a growing commitment to progress, from individual efforts to broader initiatives, like hostels and community support. If we each commit to making an impact, we can help shift the public view on homelessness and ultimately, make it a thing of the past here in the UK.
