During Mental Health Awareness Month in October, EMpower partnered with Radio Workshop (RW) to amplify youth voices and spark critical conversations around mental health. This initiative brought together South Africa Youth Fellows and RW youth reporters, collaborating to highlight the mental health challenges faced by young people, especially during the demanding exam season. 🧠 The partnership focused on empowering young people to lead discussions about mental health, offering peer-driven insights and practical coping strategies. RW youth reporters conducted interviews with SA Youth Fellows, sharing relatable stories that resonated deeply with their peers. 🎙️ These impactful interviews were aired on Community Radio Stations, showcasing youth-led conversations that not only raised awareness but also demonstrated young people’s agency in addressing mental health challenges. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our partner, Radio Workshop, for this meaningful collaboration. The voices of young people, amplified through radio, show how we can effectively raise awareness about mental health while fostering youth-driven solutions. ✨ Don’t miss out—follow our series on Instagram to hear these inspiring conversations! 💬

Today, October 10th, is World Mental Health Day. To recognize this day, we are sharing some information from an article entitled "World Mental Health Day: A Global Movement for Change and Understanding" written by Shaina Smith, System Transformation Lead with the Ottawa Health Team. "Established in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) under the leadership of Richard Hunter...this initiative was born out of a pressing need to raise awareness about mental health issues and combat the stigma surrounding mental disorders. Over the years, World Mental Health Day has evolved, reflecting a deeper and more intentional commitment to improving mental health services and understanding globally." "This day encourages us to take action and create lasting change... It also highlights the unique mental health challenges faced by First Nations, Inuit, Metis, Urban Indigenous, African, Caribbean, Black, and other marginalized communities, promoting culturally sensitive support and contributing to truth and reconciliation efforts advocating for inclusive mental health policies and practices." Shaina encourages us all to prioritize mental health and support those most in need. She highlights below the different ways you can get involved. ➡ Attend Mental Health workshops and seminars and engage in community discussions ➡ Participate in the annual Mental Health Walk or Run for Women ➡ Become a member of local advocacy groups ➡ Support mental health organizations through volunteerism or donations ➡ Raise awareness and support policy changes ➡ Foster environments at home and work where people feel comfortable to discuss mental health ➡ Lead by example by prioritizing your own mental health #mentalhealth #selfcare #creatingawareness #psychologicalsafety #advocacy Picture from RosZie on Pixabay

World Mental Health Day is observed on October 10 each year, with the goal of raising awareness about mental health issues and mobilizing efforts to support mental health globally. It was initiated by the World Federation for Mental Health in 1992 and is now supported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The day is an opportunity to highlight the importance of mental health care and advocate for better services and policies, aiming to reduce stigma and discrimination around mental health conditions. Each year, the day has a theme to focus global attention on particular aspects of mental health. The theme for 2024 is “Mental Health is a Universal Human Right,” emphasizing the need to prioritize mental health in all sectors of society. It’s a reminder that everyone should have access to mental health care without discrimination or barriers. Many organizations and communities around the world participate in campaigns, events, and activities to promote mental well-being, mental health education, and the importance of early intervention and support.
