✨ After a month of virtual learning, the participants of the MenEngage Africa Training Institute (MATI 2024) are now in Kenya for an intensive in-person training on Gender, Peace and Security. #MATI2024 will cover modules on conflict, gender, and peace-building, international human rights frameworks to advance the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, the connections between structural violence and militarised masculinities, and the role of male allies in achieving feminist peace. Participants will also explore joint advocacy opportunities such as the AU’s #SilencingtheGuns Campaign, the AU’s Declaration on Positive Masculinities, the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, and the UN Human Rights Council Resolution 35/10. This tremendous effort is led by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), MenEngage Alliance in Africa, Sonke Gender Justice and the Gender Equality Studies and Training Program (GRÓ GEST) of the University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands). The training brought together participants from over 12 countries in Africa as well as a diverse group of facilitators and experts from all over the world. The participants are also mostly women and fifty percent of the spots were reserved for youth under the age of 32. The overall objectives are to increase understanding of participants on key concepts of conflict and peacebuilding, strengthen their understanding of causes, drivers and analysis of conflict from a feminist lens, strengthen their understand of the WPS instruments and how to mainstream the WPS agenda and to better comprehend the links between conflict and militarised masculinities and discuss strategies to mobilise men for feminist peace. 💡Stay tuned for more updates.

🌍 Rethinking International Development: Empowerment over Aid. ❇ It's not just about Aid, it's about Empowerment. Too often, discussions around international development fall into the trap of viewing aid as a one-way transaction. It's time we shift the narrative towards empowerment and sustainability. ✴ Empowerment is indeed crucial for sustainable progress. The key to meaningful change is not simply pouring resources into communities but rather, investing in local capacities and supporting self-sufficiency. This includes focusing on education, gender equality, and cultural preservation. By doing so, we're not just aiding; we're elevating. ➡ One example that comes to mind is microfinance initiatives that empower individuals to start their own businesses, lifting themselves and their communities out of poverty. Another one is community-led conservation efforts that preserve natural resources while also providing economic opportunities. ➡ Take, one more example, a recent initiative that aimed to enhance educational opportunities for girls in rural areas. Instead of merely providing financial support, the program emphasized community engagement and local leadership training. The result was not just improved access to education but a transformation in societal attitudes towards gender roles. 🔔 This approach requires patience and commitment but think of the impact it can generate. Empowering communities to shape their own future is not just development; it's a step towards true equity. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how we can further evolve our strategies for international development. Are there examples you've encountered that highlight the importance of empowerment over aid? Share your insights below and let's foster a more nuanced conversation around this critical subject. #SustainableDevelopment #Education #GenderEquality #EquityInDevelopment #CulturalPreservation #GlobalEmpowerment #InternationalDevelopment #PovertyEradication.
