We are supporting decarbonization in the smaller ports of Estonia. - Ministry of Climate is allocating 1 MEUR to national company Saarte Liinid to support development of OPS (onshore power supply) in the following ports: Roomassaare, Sviby, Rohuküla, Heltermaa, Ruhnu, Virtsu, Munalaiu, Triigi, Kihnu and Kuivastu. - The project will build new and upgrade existing shore-side power facilities and create opportunities for the use of renewable energy in ten ports. - Among other things, solar parks and batteries for energy storage will also be installed in the ports. - It is an important step to reduce the emissions and to fulfil increasing expectations from the clients, but there is a huge work ahead of us. - The Ministry of Climate Change recently allocated an additional 7 MEUR to the ports of Virtsu and Kuivastu to build the necessary infrastructure for shore-side electricity connections for electric ships and to adapt mooring berths accordingly. https://lnkd.in/d5ZiEwdb

Official information about the handover ceremony: https://lnkd.in/duv48dBG Through this project, I became part of a team of legal, economic, and technical experts, and it was a great experience to work together on something significant from an innovation, environmental, and technical perspective! Why is this facility special? 👉 Hydrogen is produced through water electrolysis (not from fossil fuels such as methane CH4 or synthesis gas, which are commonly used methods). 👉The facility uses polymer-electrolyte membrane (PEM) technology, which is modern, space-efficient, and operates with minimal environmental impact (the alternative would be alkaline electrolysis). 👉The electricity used is from a carbon-neutral source: only solar panels, which are over three years old, meaning their carbon footprint from manufacturing has already been offset. 👉 The solar park is NOT built on valuable arable land, but on a reclaimed mining area (where not much else could be constructed). 👉 The cooperation between the electrolyzer (water splitter) and the solar park is governed by advanced, innovative algorithms. I have summarized this briefly because there is some confusion in the press materials regarding green hydrogen (low carbon footprint). Findings: 👉 If non-renewable, fossil energy sources (e.g., lignite, natural gas) are used in the production of grid electricity, then hydrogen produced using electricity from the grid cannot be considered green hydrogen. 👉 While it is possible to purchase green "quotas" through energy market methods, the legal regulation of this possibility is still in development, leading to the concept of ☝ virtual green hydrogen 👆 .

Different countries currently have various "tolerance fee" systems. Did you know that in #Estonia 🇪🇪, local #governments can use up to 1% of a wind farm's annual revenue for the benefit of the #community and its #residents? 🤓 Up to half of this amount is distributed among people living within 3 kilometers of the #wind #turbines. The rest can be used by the #local #government for whatever is most needed in the area. For example, last year, wind farm fees were collected in four wind park areas in Estonia, with additional funds allocated to three more where projects were under construction. ⚡️Interestingly, this system, which values local residents, serves as a model for other countries! Our recent survey confirms that majority of Estonians support buildout of more onshore wind power. This of course has to be done in a considerate and sustainable way - with regards to local people, nature, the electricity grid as well as the total cost of electricity to the end-users. These are exactly the priorities we have with our projects at Vindr.

🌍 Project Partner Meeting in Ljubljana! On December 10-11, 2024, the #HyEfRe project partners came together in Ljubljana, Slovenia, for a productive meeting hosted by Energetska agencija KSSENA / Energy Agency KSSENA of the Savinjska, Šaleška and Koroška Region. The Energieinstitut an der JKU Linz made contributions focusing on: ⚖️Legal and regulatory framework assessment This activity focuses on evaluating the legal and regulatory framework for hydrogen integration and waste heat utilization across the participating countries. Key objectives include identifying legal barriers that hinder economic feasibility and ensuring alignment with EU directives such as the Renewable Energy Directives. A transnational report summarizing national specifics will be developed, along with actionable policy recommendations. 📊 Stakeholder Analysis A comprehensive stakeholder analysis was conducted to assess stakeholder impact on renewable energy and hydrogen projects in Central Europe. Findings presented at the meeting included the identification of relevant stakeholders, their categorization into subgroups, and evaluation of their roles, influence, importance, general attitude and engagement needs. 🌱 The meeting was an excellent opportunity to review the progress made and to plan next steps in advancing hydrogen technologies to facilitate the transition to renewable energy in Central Europe. 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐏𝐮𝐦𝐩 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐐𝐚𝐪𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐪🔥 Nukissiorfiit, INI A/S, and Kommune Kujalleq have teamed up to install a new heat pump in Qaqortoq. Before the summer, Nukissiorfiit completed the installation of an air-to-water heat pump in one of INI's/municipality's apartment complexes. With a capacity of 30 kW, the heat pump will, in combination with an electric boiler and an oil boiler, provide heating to 24 apartments. A heat pump is an energy-efficient heating method that generates heat by utilizing the energy already present in the air or the ground. Therefore, Nukissiorfiit is currently investigating whether heat pumps can be used to optimize energy consumption for heating homes in areas where hydropower is limited, such as in Qaqortoq. Nukissiorfiit chose to conduct the pilot project in this building because its existing central heating system was relatively ideal for the project. Both Nukissiorfiit and the Greenlandic society have a shared interest in using energy as efficiently as possible, not only for economic reasons but also to benefit the climate. With the pilot project, Nukissiorfiit expects to increase energy efficiency. For each 1 kWh of electricity input, it is expected to generate 2.7 kWh of heat. This pilot project is thus viewed as essential for Nukissiorfiit's and society's future energy solutions. In addition to this small pilot project, Nukissiorfiit has initiated preliminary studies for another heat pump project in South Greenland. This time, the project will be on a larger scale, as Nukissiorfiit aims to explore the possibility of supplementing the district heating system with a central heat pump. Leading players of construction industry are taking steps to make an impact on reducing emissions. YIT - Urban developer and construction company and Solnet Group signed a frame agreement to build rooftop solar systems on new buildings. As one of the largest construction company in the Nordics, YIT is targeting to be carbon neutral for its own operations by 2030 and for emission reductions in construction to be reduced by more than 30 per cent from the 2019 level. Again a good example how important partnerships are, in order to make an impact.
