Faculty from Colorado State University have received one of the largest awards in CSU history, amounting to $326 million for three projects that will help reduce methane emissions nationwide and continue research for sustainability. The first project will focus on research to reduce methane emissions from marginal and conventional wells and will be led by Daniel Zimmerle, the director of METEC at the Colorado State University Energy Institute. The second project will focus on creating a national methane inventory and will be led by research scientist, Anna Hodshire, from the CSU Energy Institute and Associate Faculty in the CSU Systems Engineering Department. The third and final project will focus on reducing methane emissions from pipeline engines and will be led by Daniel Olsen and Bret Windom from the Department of Mechanical Engineering -Colorado State University and Tim Vaughn from the CSU Energy Institute. Congrats to all those involved in this ground-breaking research!

But stepping into the world of oil and gas construction taught me otherwise. This principle, the one that explains how pressure, velocity, and flow work together, isn’t just theoretical—it’s the heartbeat of pipeline systems. Imagine this: The same science that lifts airplanes keeps pipelines flowing smoothly. In fuel gas networks or liquid transfer systems, we see Bernoulli’s genius at play every day, ensuring efficiency and safety while solving real-world challenges. It’s fascinating how a principle from 1738 drives innovations in today’s industry! Here’s my takeaway: The more we connect the dots between foundational science and real-world applications, the better we can design systems that last. Just as Will McDowall asked, I've had a read of his interesting comparative paper looking at civil services in UK, Germany and the Netherlands use of evidence in energy policy. What is interesting is how, at first glance the UK system appears to be very 'internal' compared with the German and Dutch systems. There appear to be no 'analytic specialisms' in the latter two systems compared with the UK. A lot of what Will looked at was energy systems modelling which had gone through a process of 'in-housing' in DECC around 2012 after the various outsourcing approaches had failed. Clearly the German and Dutch models have resolved the challenges of independent but policy-relevant evidence by rather out-structuring rather than outsourcing. Outside of the modelling world, a lot of UK analysis is outsourced - Laurent Lioté, PhD showed that much of the key engineering advice is often either seconded in, or commissioned out - I wonder if any inward secondees from Shell appeared in the Netherlands? And I'd suspect (need to do the numbers) but the value of outsourced research per year is probably greater than the value of employment of specialist... or perhaps the same...? Be a good metric to compare these. But either way, the externalisation of expertise exists almost as much in the UK as in NL and DE but given the more market orientation of UK, needs maying government analytic regulator roles (analysts) to keep the suppliers in check... we should def have that seminar Will!

Not all #jurisdictions are covered in the #lexicon and not all #topics are explored in great detail. The lexicon is not intended to be a definitive #guide, but simply a collection of some of the most commonly encountered #terms in #wind, #carboncapture, #hydrogen, #solar and other #energy transition-related #sectors. The guide is not intended to constitute legal advice (on what can be complex legal issues) or be relied upon as such, but is simply a tool to help navigate what is for some unfamiliar territory.
