Whilst China reduces it reliance on liquid fuel, there is still more work before EV's can replace ICE with the same service life. China has passed peak automotive fuel demand, with state-run refineries and service stations shutting down as the country accelerates its transition to electric transport. With EV penetration exceeding 50% in major cities, the demand for liquid fuel is declining, leading to a ripple effect on crude oil imports, refining capacity, and fuel retail networks. This shift is not just a response to electrification but also a reflection of broader economic challenges. While the average economic life of an EV remains at around 10 years—half that of a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle—the transition to electric power will significantly impact oil import costs and the balance of trade. The primary driver of an EV’s lifespan is battery range, with replacement costs often exceeding $14,000. By contrast, hybrid battery packs can be replaced for as little as $2,000, with a payback distance of around 30,000 km, while plug-in hybrids cost approximately $5,000 with a similar economic return. The lower range of affordable plug-in hybrids, typically around 45 km, covers 95% of suburban commutes, displacing the most inefficient fuel consumption. With crude and refined fuel imports making up roughly one-third of petrol pump prices, the shift to EVs and hybrids has profound implications for national trade balances and energy security. The rise of cheap Chinese EVs presents an opportunity to further reduce oil consumption, but concerns remain over built-in remote deactivation and their shorter economic lifespan. There is still significant work to be done before ICE vehicles can be entirely phased out. This transition presents both challenges and opportunities, particularly for nations like Australia, which must balance energy security, trade impacts, and long-term vehicle ownership costs. . Dave Mullaney offers an interesting take on fleet electrification. It got me thinking about how the ICE-to-EV transition is like the landline-to-cell phone transformation. A landline gives you phone call access; a cell phone gives you access to a myriad of resources, much as an EV fleet opens a new world of electricity options for commercial fleet owners that are not available via fossil-fuel vehicles. Smart fleet versus dumb fleet.
It was fun to join the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) pod cast to discuss electric trucks, battery prices, solar, storage, China's impact on the EV market, and other topics. Give it a listen because Mike Roeth is deeply knowledgeable and a great conversationalist. As for me, maybe there's a reason they saved me for 98th place... https://lnkd.in/gXbgqS9X

This does not include all of the aid and assistance that Chinese companies have recieved in developing the supply chain for EV raw materials. Specifically the supply of critical minerals such as Co, Ni, graphite, and Li. From investments in mines, to refineries to PCAM and cell assembly. One can speculate that the number quoted here is perhaps the tip of the iceberg. That’s the difference in China. When they decide to support and build an industry, they throw a lot of capital behind in. It will be impossible for Western organizations to keep up relying on venture capital and private investment.
