The UN climate secretariat, UNFCCC, last month sounded the alarm bell about a major shortfall in its budget at a time when its workload is growing. UN climate chief Simon Stiell urged governments to step up with more funding - but they didn't do so in time to prevent the cancellation of the UN's Regional Climate Weeks for 2024, which are an important tool for gathering perspectives for developing countries. What will be cut next?

On the brink of this year’s United Nations #climate summit, #COP29, governments are grappling with how to devise their next climate plans. These are meant to include bolder pledges and explain how policymakers intend to achieve them. They also need to account for budgetary constraints, a cost-of-living crisis, the wish for energy independence and use of domestic natural resources – and, very apposite for this week, election outcomes. But BloombergNEF analysis suggests that while some Group-of-20 governments have made headway on implementing robust policies to tackle climate change, others have not. My colleague Maia (Maeva) Godemer and I are happy to release the fifth edition of BNEF's Climate Policy Factbook, which assesses the G-20’s performance in three green policy areas that would accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy without considerable government outlay: fossil-fuel subsidies, carbon pricing and climate-risk policy. https://lnkd.in/e5bgh476

Recent reports underscore a stark reality: the world's leading nations, particularly the G-7, are falling short in meeting their climate goals. Despite pledges to combat the "triple crisis" of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, G-7 countries are significantly expanding fossil fuel production and infrastructure investments, threatening global efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C. Key findings: -G-7 countries could become major polluters, with the US, UK, and Canada potentially responsible for nearly half of all CO2 pollution from new fossil fuel extraction by 2050. -Current policies are inadequate, with only half of the required emissions reductions projected by 2030. -Urgent action is needed to drastically accelerate renewable energy development. 🎤 That’s a wrap! I just finished speaking to CBC/Radio-Canada outlets nationwide about the outcomes of #COP29. It’s always energizing to start the day discussing critical climate issues (note the 5:29 am interview time!). We touched on key points of the final agreement, including: ➡️ The ongoing controversy over the lack of strong commitments to phase out fossil fuels. ➡️ A small but significant step: increased funding to help developing nations transition to clean energy and adapt to climate impacts. While progress was made, I wouldn’t call this conference a success. A lack of unified ambition underscores the urgent need for nations to come together and act decisively on climate. Without it, the impacts will only intensify for all of us. I will share recordings soon—stay tuned!

The climate talks in Bonn failed to make progress toward the important goal of setting a new global target for climate financing, which faces a deadline at the Climate Summit COP29 in Baku in November. "The climate crisis is more than just an emissions problem. Climate justice is about people and their rights. The endless pursuit of economic interests of wealthy countries and their polluting industries is causing harm to communities which have done nothing to cause the crisis,” CIEL's Lien Vandamme. In Bonn, wealthy countries refused - once again - to talk about the trillions of dollars developing countries need to adapt to global warming impacts and for a just transition to a safe climate future. The only way forward out of this impasse is for wealthy nations to show up in Baku ready to pay up for what they owe. Climate ACTION vs IMPACT. The media and those like me working in communications, must highlight the action we can all take and not just focus on the impact of climate change and the role of governments. While driving home from a client meeting yesterday, I tuned into BBC News Radio 4's PM programme with Evan Davis. It was a lengthy journey and so I was able to listen to the full one-hour show, which is normally an enjoyable and productive time. But I became increasingly concerned at hearing the headline: "the UN warns the 1.5 degree target for global warming is likely to be missed." And then a feeling of hopelessness when the report talked about “catastrophic” impacts and how it was all down to global governments to deliver on their promises made at COP27 and COP28. While I understand this to be part of the story it's just ONE part. There are also stories of hope and action about what we can all do at an individual and community level. See Local Storytelling Exchange for example case studies nationwide. For climate action to happen, we need to make it REAL, NORMAL and importantly, POSSIBLE. So when I reached home I channelled my energy into focusing on the positive work being carried out by Climate Outreach and the likes of Tara Bryer, who leads the charity's training in how to become a trusted climate communicator.
