With COP29 Azerbaijan at its halfway mark and as delegates continue to discuss the role of public and private finance for addressing the climate crisis, I welcome the focus on developed nations addressing decarbonisation challenges in developing countries.   As an operator of mid to late life assets in sub-Saharan Africa, every day we understand the role that energy resource utilisation can play for our host communities. The energy sector is vital for providing essential services, decarbonising the global economy through its investments in the energy systems of the future, engagement with customers, and measurement, reporting and independent verification of emissions data.   The COP29 Azerbaijan Energy Day acts as a timely prompt to reaffirm our commitments.   We will continue to:   ⚡️ Help deliver energy security We will continue to play a crucial role in ensuring a balance between energy needs of our host nations, local content promotion, and environmental stewardship.   🎯 Focus on emissions reductions Our focus on the elimination of flaring on our operated assets will reduce the effects of one of the most potent greenhouse gases – methane. We also work with our partners at our non-operated assets to pursue emissions reduction opportunities.   🌿 Embrace nature-based solutions We are passionate about developing high quality nature-based solutions projects, similar to our partnership with the Ghana Forestry Commission this year, to meet our net zero ambitions, shape the future of carbon markets, and enhance our role in promoting biodiversity.   We recognise that collaboration is key to driving meaningful progress in responsible resource stewardship. Let’s join the forces to combat climate change and contribute towards sustainable development. At Customized Energy Solutions initiative for rural economies we are working in economic development projects that can boost rural economy and at the same time enable energy transition and local jobs

Industries like energy, cement, steel and construction significantly contribute to global GHG emissions, making their transition to near-zero emissions essential for meeting international climate targets. Yet, decarbonization in hard-to-abate industries is a complex phenomenon which requires tailor made strategies and roadmaps that prioritize and mitigate key emissions sources. We should explore this transition in a holistic manner considering the whole value chain of industries from raw materials and fuel sources to production processes, products and markets and by also considering broader circularity perspective including logistics, recycling and design parameters. We envision that green transition in hard-to-abate industries will be a multi-decade and gradual process in which green pioneers and carbon players will interplay a competition game around decarbonization. Decarbonization strategy requires a nuanced approach that ensures a cost-benefit balance at the industry and company level. Today, within the scope of COP29, we have discussed decarbonization agenda, opportunities and challenges with some of the key industry players from Azerbaijan. Throughout the panel discussion, we have highlighted actionable solutions and strategies for accelerating the journey towards near-zero emissions. We have discussed many of the levers such as renewable energy, alternative fuels, electrification, carbon capture, design and digitalization and implementation of cutting-edge technologies such as AI, satellite and drones in detecting and reducing carbon emissions. As PwC, our aim is to continue to support and facilitate such industry consultations among industry leaders in order to unlock sectoral and company specific pathways to sustainable practices that are both economically viable and socially responsible.
