Welcome to ESIG, Alex Shattuck!
🎉 We're excited to share our new case study with The AES Corporation on the largest single deployment of Dynamic Line Ratings in the US!
💭 Our early learnings from deploying 42 sensors on 5 diverse lines emphasize the potential for DLR to revolutionize real-time grid monitoring, improving operations and strategic investment in assets.

Basis risk, congestion, and interconnections costs are among the biggest challenges I see investors and developers grappling with. This great case study by The AES Corporation and LineVision illustrates the tangible benefits dynamic line rating can bring quickly to get more out of our existing transmission system while we go through the multi year process it will take to add new transmission lines. Kudos to AES for showing other transmission owners the path forward and kudos to LineVision for how far their technology has evolved and its ability to provide well documented benefits besides just increasing line capacity.

We are excited to announce our appointment as the new delivery partner for Operations and Maintenance Services for the AusNet Distribution Network, positioning us as Australia’s largest service delivery partner in the electricity distribution and transmission sector
It’s a continuation of our long-standing partnership with AusNet, which includes the recent extension to the Transmission Operations and Maintenance Service Agreement, the design and construction of transmission projects and the establishment of the Packenham Depot to deliver Distribution Services within AusNet’s network footprint.
Starting 1 August, 2025, this contract involves evolving AusNet’s service delivery model to provide better outcomes for their customers, especially during severe weather events.
One Distribution and Growth General Manager, James Quigley (CPA, GAICD), will lead the new Distribution Operations & Maintenance Agreement (DOMSA) contract, working closely with AusNet to ensure a smooth transition.
We look forward to delivering for AusNet, its customers, and the communities it serves.

Wanted to give my summary of Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) technical conference on the collocation of large loads, such as data centers, at generating facilities. It's a 4 hour conference with 3 panels, was a fascinating deep dive into the complex intersection of energy regulation, grid reliability, and the rapidly growing demands of data centers. If you want to discuss this further feel free to message me.
The conference highlighted the urgent need for collaboration between regulators, energy providers, and large load customers to address several key challenges:
- **Load forecasting:** The growth of data centers is outpacing traditional load forecasting models, requiring new approaches to accurately predict and plan for future demand.
- **Resource adequacy:** Ensuring sufficient generation and transmission capacity to meet this surging demand is critical, particularly as the transition to renewable energy sources continues.
- **Rate fairness:** Striking a balance between the needs of large load customers and the interests of retail consumers is crucial to avoid cost-shifting and ensure equitable access to affordable energy.
- **Reliability:** Maintaining grid stability in the face of dynamic load changes from data centers requires innovative solutions and robust infrastructure investments.
- **Jurisdiction:** Navigating the complexities of state and federal jurisdiction over collocation arrangements demands clarity and coordination to avoid regulatory conflicts and streamline project development.
As an advisor working with both data center companies and renewable energy companies, I see tremendous opportunities to help navigate this evolving landscape. I'm particularly interested in:
- Developing strategies for data center siting and development that optimize grid integration, minimize environmental impact, and maximize the benefits of collocating with renewable energy sources.
- Exploring innovative solutions such as energy storage, demand response programs, and advanced grid technologies to enhance resource adequacy and grid resilience.
I believe that by working together, we can unlock the full potential of collocation to drive economic growth, accelerate the clean energy transition, and ensure a reliable and sustainable energy future for all.
I welcome the opportunity to discuss these topics further and explore how I can assist your organization in navigating this evolving landscape. Please feel free to connect with me.

I’m excited to share a new paper published with colleagues from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Texas Army National Guard, and ARCOS LLC, called “Electric Vehicles as Mobile Power.”
We examined whether EVs could provide emergency energy storage for Texas National Guard Facilities using bidirectional chargers. In the process, we found that seven or more EVs can provide 72 hours of power during a blackout across three Army National Guard Readiness Centers in the Austin area. The solution can save $330,000 compared to battery energy storage systems and generate an additional $155,000 in energy arbitrage and demand response value.
Best of all, the fleet is mobile! It can bring emergency power wherever bidirectional chargers exist. We’re calling this project “EV-AMP.”
