Excited to share that @Nyheim Plasma Institute of Drexel University, in collaboration with Boson Energy, has been awarded the BIRD Energy grant. Over decades of dedicated research and development, the Nyheim Plasma Institute has pioneered the Gliding Arc Plasmatron (GAP) – an innovative plasma torch known for its cost-effectiveness, low maintenance, and superior energy efficiency. Boson Energy has introduced a groundbreaking gasification process designed to treat mixed solid waste streams for Hydrogen production. The primary goal of the joint project is to leverage Drexel’s GAP technology to create an efficient tar-cracking apparatus, enhancing Hydrogen production using Boson’s process data. NEW INTERNATIONAL PROJECT ASTERISK - Revolutionizing seawater electrolysis for #GREENHYDROGEN production This new year, we are delighted to start our new project on green hydrogen production from direct seawater electrolysis, titled ‘Integrated process for seawater electrolysis using a PGM-free anion exchange membrane stack’. Or as we like to call it – ASTERISK. The project is led by our colleague Asst. Prof. Dr. Suraj Gupta and is funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and co-funded by the European Commission. ASTERISK is an ambitious project helmed by 12 partner institutions from 8 countries with Prof. Pau Farràs from University of Galway as the project coordinator. The consortium will work on developing a 5 kWe anion-exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer stack with components compatible and stable under saline conditions, using real seawater from the Mediterranean Sea. Last week at the Heavy Ion Accelerator Symposia on Fundamental and Applied Science (HIAS), Dr Julie Pearce had the opportunity to present research into the promising potential of using muti-isotope studies in environmental assessments, with particular reference to their use in detecting gas and groundwater connectivity or leakage into aquifers from gas extraction operations.   In the presentation, titled ‘Understanding gas and groundwater sources in aquifers overlying a gas reservoir with 36Cl and 14C’, Julie discussed data collected through the use of multi-isotope studies on aquifers overlying CSG reservoirs. The data showed that while the majority of shallow aquifer bores had gas generated in situ in the aquifer by microbes, one (the Springbok Sandstone aquifer) measured up to 1200 mg/L of dissolved gas, which could be from gas extraction or due to minor coal interlayers in the aquifer.   HIAS,is hosted by The Australian National University, aims to bring instrumentation and accelerator experts, national and international researchers, students and potential user communities together to discuss the uses and development of Heavy Ion Accelerators. #uq #geoscience #gas #naturalgas #energy #emissions #future #sustainability #environment

CO2-Plume Geothermal (CPG) can combine long-term CCS with geothermal energy extraction, making it a real CCUS technology. But what developments might be necessary to pave the way for future CPG systems, especially regarding surface equipment, such as CO2 turbines?    We tried to answer this question - at least partly - in our most recent publication. I am happy to share this joint interdisciplinary work between ETH Zürich (Martin Saar, Jasper de Reus), Chair of Turbomachinery (University of Duisburg-Essen) (Dieter Brillert, Sebastian Schuster) and TUM - Lehrstuhl für Energiesysteme (Hartmut Spliethoff, Andreas Corpancho Villasana).
