From Shakespeare to Ihimaera: New-look English curriculum planned...but unless young people reach year 7 able to read and engage with the set texts there's no point in doing this. It will just turn ever greater numbers off English. Likewise, unless there has been a sustained lead-in you cannot suddenly institute a major change in texts for years 11-13 and expect students to be able to cope. Change needs to start at pre-primary and primary school and build a literate cohort able to engage with such texts by the time they reach years 11-13. Otherwise this is a by-default local version of a grammar school vs comprehensive school division and creation by stealth...

My first degree focused on English literature because I loved reading and writing. It was the only way I could really get through college after trying other recommended fields. I do believe in the premise of this article, but I do have issues with the first part discussing jobs. The rest of the post about engaging lessons is better. Completely agree. Studying GCSE English should involve and allow students to select their own desired texts to read & evaluate from, rather than being restricted with specific classic novel & texts. Developing core english skills is more than understanding traditional novels & texts. Instead, we should focus on meeting specific tailored needs. Many students are placed at a disadvantage by forcing them to study a particular novel that they are simply not interested in, resulting them to feel disengaged with the curriculum. #gcseenglish

How I Teach Grammar in English Teaching grammar is about making it meaningful, practical, and yes, fun. Once students see how grammar fits into their lives, they begin to love learning it 1. Use Games and Activities Who says grammar can’t be fun? I often use games like “Sentence Scramble” to make learning feel like play. These activities make grammar less about memorizing rules and more about using language in a creative way. When students are laughing and working together, they don’t even realize they’re practicing grammar! 2. Practice, Practice, Practice The best way to get better at grammar is to practice using it in real situations. If we’re learning the past tense, I’ll ask students to share stories about their day or their weekend: “What did you do yesterday?” This gets them to practice without feeling like it’s a test. I make sure they’re speaking a lot. The more they talk, the more confident they become with their grammar. 3. Focus on What’s Most Useful I always start by thinking about what my students will actually use in their daily lives. For example, we use the simple present tense all the time when talking about routines: “I wake up at 7 AM,” “He drinks coffee every morning.” I get students to practice these common phrases until they feel comfortable. Then, if there’s time, I’ll introduce more complex tenses, like the future perfect. But I always start with what matters most to them. 4. Focus on Their Goals If a student needs to pass an exam, we go deeper. But if they just want to hold conversations, we keep it light and focus on practical use.
